with the rainfall that started friday the only thing sticking to my mind was hitting the chehalis . walked through the fishermans trail until i hit a run . to my eye chum salmon are abundant but not a single coho to be seen it was around 8 am and the water was a little low and clear . started walking down to the next run where it had a bit of a pool. coho were sitting on the waters surface . i threw roe into the pool and the cleardrift sank hard , a coho flashed and ran around the log with so much tension the leader broke . okay a little time past and another coho was hooked using a #3 bluefox , after a thrilling minutes fight it was beaching itself only for the hook to pop out at shore . hooked a couple chunky jacks which i would consider keeping but with the adipose fin there it is not allowed . went to another run about 50 yards away which hasnt been fished yet . decent water and a good drift only good things can happen put on a quarter piece of coho roe on the #4 gammy hook , as the float went down the drift i felt taps i thought it was bottum but it kept the same exact same tap even as the float went deeper into the run . after setting the hook a good sized fish was on . not a chum or coho's fight either , a steelhead was at the end of line , my first ever but a coloured up summer run . after being landed a real nice guy i met on the river took a picture . really nothing to brag about a kelt but it was my first so i felt pretty happy about it .
With my new aquaintance we ventured down throughout log jams until we met almost with chehalis cannel where it meets with the harrison . with water rising and making a slightly murky green tinge we could tell fishing might be rewarding . surprising only chums and more chums rolling in were present no coho were coming in , it could very well be a slow year for coho on this river . came back to a new run which we didnt fish yet , maybe the nicest run of them all . the best bet for some coho action blades , roe , wool were tried but no love . fished the previous runs were i hooked the other coho previously that day with my buddy and it was slow no coho to be seen probably quickly shot to the canyon . give it a few more days of rain and let the water come back down to be fished again would be a good idea but so far the coho run looks quite poor and more looks to be a disgusting chum galaxy . ill make another report in a few days or next week when ill give it another go .
