Im thinking that there just might be a lucky guy that gets the first coho this weekend. My earliest was Sept 7 on the vedder. Ill probley wait till next weekend till i get the new 12lbs mono wet. If anyone has any questions on this spook easy, yet exciting species; please feel free to ask away.

It was already caught, supposedly there are coho in the hatchery too. They are no spookier than any other salmonid species either. Most of the time they are quite stupid but they do put up a good fight

Thomas- do you have any idea when they start heading up the Dewdney Slough and Norrish creek? (last year they were pretty colored by the time I headed over there).
Also do you have any tips for gear fishing the relatively shallow frog water in the upper slough (I'm used to moving water and haven't mastered the fly rod yet).

The fraser has an awesome coho fishery, but no retention 'til early October.
I was using #2 indiana blades and clevises over a series of different sized small glass dollar store beads and a 1/0 hook tied with a baitholder knot (often with roe).
Used a 30" leader and 1/4 oz egg weight. Usualy had a coho on every few minutes on a cast/drift/retreave (no float), but had less jacks and more larger coho without using roe.
Thinking of switching to colorado blades for the slow/frog water in the sloughs and wondering if I should change blade sizes too...and/or use a slower retreave with a float?

Hey guys, i hadnt heard about any in the hatchery but you never know. As for your question chris, im also not good on the fly and id say that would be the best for frog water. Or super light gear with tiny spinners or french blades.

I also love the colorado blades for coho and some may laugh but i use a float to control my depth, postion above water and smooth out my retrieve. I have sucesses in all types of water, incliding still water.

Right, sorry chris about not putting in my two cents on the dewtney slough question. I always drive over it on my way to the chealis river. I dont know much about it but i do have a friend that fished with his father for 10 years. Ill have a chin wag with him and then ill post it.
Man i love this time of year, going to get geared up today after work. Need a few little things.

Hey james it all depends where your at. We alot of options for this fishery. Yiu have capilao in the rains come, You also have the seymore in north vancouver.
Maple Ridge has the alloete river and ruskin area has the stave river.
Mission is one of my favs with suicide creek, dewney slough and the little gem called the cheahis.
The valley has the Vedder river, the harrison and the fraser.
And id pick up a few more spoons, i always carry 5 to 10 with me.

Me and the wife hit up the vedder sat morning for 4 hours. Mostly just walking and scouting, but did do alittle casting. Wife was tossing wool and i was tossing a spoon. No coho but i did land a nice 1 to 2 pound dolly that was a rare treat.
Wow and did the river ever change, alot of my faverite lower river holes are filled in. Not alot of deep water out there this year.

What would be a good rod and reel combo for casting spoons? i will be anchoring and fishing between the mouth of the fraser and the bridge over highway 1. Do you use roe with a spoon??

Roe with a spoon sounds weird to me. One or the other. I also think people worry to much about their set ups. As long as you have a rod and reel made for the typing of fishing you are doing you are fine. And of course the right strength in line/rod/reel.

I used to love using a spin casting rod for coho but now i use my 10' 6" and abu bait caster for everything. I just change the line 3 times a year and have never had a problem with using spoons. You just have to adjust your technic.
I use 65lbs braided for fraser
12lbs mono for coho
17lbs mono for steelhead

gmcbill i will tell you that without a doubt, stave river is not that great for a coho producing river, besides the fact that they are scarce in that system, stave is flooded with big dirty chum.
AND
please people stop mentioning the alouette river as a main salmon stream, it is a small system with very few returning fish as is. we dont need more and more people showing up and taking the remainder of them.

question, are hatchery coho the same as farmed salmon? Looked around but couldn't find an answer. Like how long do they grow them in the hatchery

hatchery coho are released when still very small to go live in the ocean, just like wild fish do.
farmed fish spend their whole life in a pen with all the disease.

nice. I read cohos are kept for 1 year before being released though. Other fish like chums can be released sooner

Hey fishforthought, dont tell me that i cant tell people what rivers have fish. I know that the alloutte in maple ditch has very few coho in it, but it does have an opening and people have a right to fish durning that openning if they follow the rules.
Im sick of fishermen being so secretive, i remember fising that river 25 years ago but havent touched it in 15 years. But there is nothing wrong with somene standing next to you one morning and tring thier luck. So again please dont ever make a comment like that again.

wow. i never knew the alloette had to be kept secret.
i fished it for half my life and noone told me. when did it become a secret, when you moved there? sorry that does not give you spotters rights.
as for thomas telling people, all he did was list the various streams he could think of in the diferent areas. oops he forgot kanaka creek. there are coho there too. or is that a secret?

Good ole kanaka, my old man used to teach me there when i was little. "all right son were going to catch us a salmon" never caught crap all but remember them all jumping in the mist. To this day i still havent had the heart to tell him he was using the wrong gear lol. But the memories are priceless.
Thanks for the reply Cagey and Kanaka has really had some issues over the decades. To this day i dont really know tje story as to why the salmon got decimated but i heard you can retain one cohi a day.

no problem thomas. i grew up fishing at the falls for trout. caught lots in those days. i also spent many hours bottom fishing for cutties and jacks (not many coho then.)at the railway bridge. caught lots of bullheads too !
the salmon were wiped out before my time. the secret river had a much better run but they wiped them out with the gravel removal.
as a kid the secrt river had tons of chum, lots of coho and even a good steelhead run but they disappeared gradually when they started harvesting the gravel. there were huge holesfrom 216th upriver and from about 226th upriver that have probably since been filled in...enough of history of my old stomping grounds.

Smaller systems that can't handle heavy fishing pressure have smaller limits and/or opening restrictions to account for that. It's up to the DFO to determine who can fish where, when and for what...and they also have the option to stock systems accordingly.
IMO there's nothing unethical about talking about the smaller systems, everyone has the same rights or priviledges to fish them.

Seems we are going in circles here. Can we get back on topic? Ethnicity should not have a real bearing on fishing. Presumably we are all Canadians here, most of us being of mixed ethnicity and living in a multi-ethnic society. I myself enjoy fishing with a varied group myself including: English, Scottish, French, German, Swedish, Portugese, Ukrainian, Philippino and Beagle. Actually that is the makeup of my household too, welcome to Canada...
So seeing as I cannot be out fishing Coho, I would love to hear stories and see photos of those that are. I fished a lot for them in the ocean when I was a kid and miss it.

i would suggest that you re-read the racist comments. it was certainly not the moderator saying anything racist. quite the opposite. i totally agree that the is no need to make racist commesnts such as the member did. the reaction of the members showing their disapproval is strong evidence that the majority of the members , as well as myself, will not stand for this.

I have fished a variety of places with a variety of races. Why do we need to identify the race of a fisherman (except in the case of natives who have special fishing rights)? So it is the truth, it is still a racially discriminative commentary. Everywhere you go you will see people of different colours, that is what makes this Canada. Move to Kentucky or somewhere if you want to be solely around those that look like you, hey if you find a town small enough you can probably all share the same last name. What is it about your ethnicity that gives you more access rights to what you have deemed you own elite fishing holes?

go check out the stave river chum massacre that happens every november and then repost in this forum with the same views u have now.
if you wish to defend yourself for your racist comments you will have to go elsewhere. i have fished the stave river many times. there were a viariety of fishermen there. there were young fishermen, old fishermen, male and female. i witnessed some people snagging fish and illegally keeping them. some of these people were white caucasians. i saw many who were following the rules. many of these law abiding citizens of this country were of asian origin. i am afraid that without the racist outlook you have i was unable to see anything that supported your comment or the defence of that comment.

I've seen the Stave River fishery plenty last year. There are more than enough chum and coho to handle the pressure and dfo was there frequently making sure people followed the regs.

Well...this was a good string until the race stuff got into it. Hope we can get it back on topic! Looking forward to getting my first coho of the season, plan to be touring a number of local spots (including those mentioned here).

Ok guys i started this thread for a reason. That being to inform others of where they can go and how to fish for this type of species. I was also hoping others could also use this thread as a tool to help them land that first fish of the season and to be informed as to what is going out there, such as river conditions and success stories. So here is an update on the vedder.
Whent on sunday to lower river from 6am to 11am and fished all the way up past the rain bridge. No fish caught and none seen. The water was also very low and crystal clear. After on my way back i crossed the hwy on bridge and the water in the canal is lower then i have seen in previse years. We need alot of rain to boost the vedder.
I think im going to try walking down the canal to the mouth this saturday. Ill update then.

okay i managed to stay away from this ridiqulous post long enough. you guys and your secret rivers is so out of hand. all a guy needs to do is go to dfo web site click on freshwater fishing opportunities and theres a list of all the waters you can fish, with the appropriate regulations for that water. SO ITS NOT A SECRET AT ALL. and the dfo knows how to manage a fishery thats what they went to university for 8 years for, its not like there just going to let a hole gang of people in to go decimate a system. so........ if you know how to read and you buy a license you can fish where ever you want.

Thanks for the post abe and your 100% right. I havent carried the fresh water reg guide in a long time but it was my bible at one time. Alot of the questions here can always be answered with that magazine. I will finish with this post and start a new one down the road.

Sorry if I end your thread on a sour note but..........
If DFO can manage a fishery so well Abe, then why did they allow FN to go over by 511% on the Somass Chinnook fishery. They were given {by DFO} a target Number of 1900 fish, but they took 9700 and all the while there was two DFO patrol boats visual at all times.
And to add to that, why is it that the DFO puts a bait ban on the Fraser River around this time every year to protect the wild coho and steelhead, but still allows the floss fishery to go on, even when there is no sockeye retention openings?
Sure, they put out some lame advisory to anglers not to use this BB method, but no-one listens and the bars are still full of guys looking to floss any kind of salmon they can, what another joke that is.
Do you actually think that the low numbers of bait fishermen there are, are going to catch more coho and steelhead than the thousands of flossers ? Not a chance in hell man.
Therefor IMHO, your theory on the DFO and their 8 years of University can basically pound sand. They prove it year after year, in all sectors, that they are completely incompetent. I feel for some of the field officers but then again, if you work for a bunch of incompetent tits and know it, why would you stay ?

okay bentley i here you loud and clear, but the fraser river panel doesnt have an easy job either alot of there job is calculated guess work. and every guy out there wants a freezer full of fish at the end of the year. so what do they do? they try and let fish get through to there spawning grounds and let us avid anglers take home a few fish. all said there managing the fishery the best they can with the hopes that there will still be fish to go around twenty years from now.
most fisher man around here dont even see the big picture either. you could do a little bit of research and look at the migratory routs of these salmon. and look at international fisheries out there that realy decimate salmon stocks. are fraser sockeye migrate as far as russia and japan where there is alot less managment in place so half the stock is depleted before they even head back to there spawning grounds and then they have to swim by alaska where theres even more comercial fisheries putting huge strains on our salmon.
its not the guys out on the fraser river flossing or the natives that are depleteing salmon stocks in the fraser, its the huge comersail fleets and cannery ships that are taking all the fish. the dfo is just trying to salvage whats left by the time the fish get back here.

I would also like to see the major hacheries double their size and pump out more fish. I would br happy with huge coho runs. I think they just need more money and it should start with bc hydro digging into their fat pockets.

i won't deny some of what you said but when it comes to calculated guess work, their the shyts. How can you let a floss fishery still take place but ban bait for a few measly bait fishermen, the floss gang {not saying all}are indubitably the biggest number of anglers that can't tell a coho from a sockeye/chinnok, let alone the steelhead etc etc.
This makes absolutely no sense at all, and this is right in the DFO's back yard.Ifyou can't take care of the local rivers, how the hell can you take care of anything else ?

I work for a city in the lower mainland and have thought about leaving lately. I think were alot like dfo in we have big shots making crappy calls, and workers that know there doing the wrong things but cant say anything. Dfo probley has a big money problem and their under staffed, same in the citys.

as well as being understaffed they also have their hands tied by the gutless politicians with respect to native fishing.
it is the same thing with the forests up north. they have totally thrown out the book on logging . when forestry calls up the company to tell them they cannot do that the companies say f 'off and keep cutting. the gov't will not back the forestry guys. fish and trees mean money to the gov't. that is all they care about.

I beleive he posted (what you quoted) to point out that the suposedly "secret" rivers are "advertised" for all to see in the regs...so aren't secret at all.

I was talking to a local MLA about fishing on the Vedder, after this person came into my work. I was talking to him about the licensing, as he's fished the Vedder and the Fraser before, but not in the last few recent years.
In our conversation, I showed him my new license, and told him that this new licensing format was the most ignorant thing B.C. Fisheries could ever come up with. When he asked "Why?", I told him that this new method of printing out your own license does nothing but give poachers another easy way out. He asked to look at my license, and said "If I was a poacher, what's to stop me from photocopying this or just reprinting a new one, since you can email a copy to yourself?" My answer, was "EXACTLY".
He seemed genuinely concerned. Whether he does anything about it or looks further into it, is up to him. And yes, before the negative nellies start ripping politicians now, at least he was made aware of the situation, and understood the concerns. Hey the way I look at it, is if nothing is done to correct the small things, then the bigger issues won't be resolved. I just hope (fingers crossed), that the message did get through to this guy as it does affect the Province in more ways than one.

Im bored while waiting in my car to start fishing the vedder canal. I brought up the liceanse thing with a dfo officer at scale bar a few months ago. People could write down 10 spring caught on the fraser and then print a new liceanse out and fill it again. Lol what joke and the officer agreeed.

Hey Red Wool, I disagree, I find purchasing and printing my fishing license from my computer at home very conveniant. I think for the most part people are honest and won't cheat. You will alway get people who cheat the system, the guy that accidentally hooks a Sockeye has a quick look and tosses it in his cooler. In my opinion there will "always" be cheaters no matter if you printed you own lisence or picked up a hard copy from you local tackle shop. Again for the most part I think people are Honest.

i've heard too many people bragging how they can never get their limit but take fish home all the time. amazing ! these licences are great BUT they make it too easy to cheat.
