Heading out to scale bar tommorow to hopefully catch my first spring of the season. I will give the report tommorow.
Fish'n BC

I heard that there are undercover DFO hanging out/fishing there, make sure you release any over 77 cm and keep only one spring. Good Luck!
abe

yz125 im heading out there tomorrow too.
if you recognize me come say hi.
i shouldnt be to hard to spot, i'll be the guy catching all the fish. lol
G.A.

good luck guys. im probably hitting it on thursday. someone bring a camera...please...lol. all ive read in reports if text and no pics so far. curious wherte the water is. was told its right up to tree line at main trail. not sure how anyone could fish though if it was as from there out is that small bush stuff that floods out
in the past scale has had a guy counting and noting whats been taken at the trail but he isnt dfo...if this is the same. he was just some native doing counts for them or someone in fisheries somewhere. ran into him a few times and half the time didnt bother to stop and show him anything......sure made lots nervous though,....lol
YZ125

Thanks ChrisS.
Hahhah alright abe ill see you there.
Ill be the 6'2 15 year old guy with 4 ukranian guys with me.
Hopefully i will be also the one catching all the fish.
YZ125

Well seems like a good day for everyone but me. I've seen 6 sockeye, 4 springs, and 1 steelhead caught. One guy caught a 40+ spring, was a hog.

YZ125

Hahah Abe I guess me and you were the only ones who didn't catch a fish lol.
Fish'n BC

How was the shore access, mosquitos and water level? Was there manny people?
ichy

Good Luck! Caught a spring well over 25lb and a sockeye but had to let them go. I was there from 10am to 6pm and saw 3 springs that were keepers with 15 feet of space between the next person. Mosquito repellant highly recommended with sunscreen. My neck is burnt!

I guess vid files doesn't work on this site.

Hey YZ125 - The 40lb was it caught by an asian dude with a black cap?
YZ125

Ichy, yea that was the guy!!! what were you wearing? I was there from 7 am to 5 pm. I was wearing a hoodie with a blue tshirt underneath and green pants.
ichy

LOL - I was the HOG you were referring to. hahahahaha
ichy

I'll be going again this Monday and Tuesday when the size band is removed.
G.A.

vid has to be loaded to a host. cant load direct from desktop. can make youtube unlisted so nobody there sees it unless you pass on the link.
hitting scale tomorrow for the day
YZ125

I was reffering the spring to be a hog not you, sry
ichy

Hahaha all good bro

Body sore like shit from it. If that fish went down stream, he would have been free. Had a 20 lb leader line only.
YZ125

Hahhah yea i bet. Thats the biggest spring that ive seen in my life!

Those are some of the pictures that i took.
Fish'n BC

Nice pictures YZ125!
YZ125

Thanks!
Alan701

nice pics. so I guess it was alright. I will probably skip reds and see what its like in the fall once I get some more roe and water is much lower.
ethicalbonker

Thanks for the pictures YZ, def made my day while at work. Guys i was wondering if your tossing 5 ounce are 4 oince. Five would be my guess.
ethicalbonker

I meant 5 or 4. Im also guessing the bar right now prob holds only 20 to 30 people.
YZ125

No problem guys! I was using 4oz and all i caught was 1 sockeye. But a guy beside me was using a 5oz and he caught two springs. I don't know whether the weight matters that much or if it is just luck. But with a 4oz, it was bouncing nicely. I did not try a 5oz, but a 3oz was too light. I am guessing with the water dropping daily you can go with a 3.5-4oz.
G.A.

nice pics..
we went this morning and i ran 4 oz, buddy tried a few diff ones from 3 to 5 and didnt make a diff. he hooked couple but lost and i got my spring in. 1 cm under..note to self...bring the metric tape not the standard one....lol

water was way low to what i was expecting myself. bar could hold hundreds not 20. you can go all the way to the top of the boundry so dont see why not.

there was a few sockeye cought today and a couple spring. down river from us. didnt seem to hit till sun came on that side of river. and watch them zombie mosquitos to...wow brutal.

and again the same guy from last year at the entrance doing the count.
ethicalbonker

Congrats GA, nice fish. I think i might go sat. I was wondering what is the hottests position on the bar guys. Also wondring if it is snaggy? Most years its been ok. Im thinking about hitting up a spot in the middle of the bar.
YZ125

ethicalbonker, i am also heading out there on sat. The bar is 100% snagless. From fishing the whole day, i haven't gotten a single snag.
G.A.

i snagged once but got it back, hooked my buddy at same time and he got a weight out of it. seemed pretty clean in the upper part to me.
fish seemed to be getting cought up and down the whole bar randomly. guys just below us got a few but mostly sockeye, had one on same time i got this one.
and fish seemed to be cought anywhere from the fast water line inwards. mine was about 20 foot short of fast water and about 3/4 down the run when it hit. had about a 9 foot leader on, dark green wool, corky...dont know if it mattered or care.
YZ125

G.A looking at my pictures, where on the bar were you fishing?
G.A.

i think its the first time i havent lost any gear
YZ125

^same here
G.A.

oh hell, ill share the vid of then end of my catch. just a couple min long

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LpQkuVvbtU
G.A.

sorry missed that post askin where i was. ...your last pic..seem i may have been just on the upper side of the last bush a bit. we were just below the boundry sign....i noticed new painted letters on it. saying fishin boundry. dont think it had that last year...worn off
G.A.

personal opinion here....if you fish lower or mid era id say you dont need to be out as far. if its anything like last year there was a hi spot out from there and a channel behind it. i dont think it changed that much over the winter and the fosh would most likely run up hat slower channel to head for fast water up at the corner. that why the no fish zone up there...not fair, they all end up there bore hitting that fast water again....just a thought..
Fish'n BC

G.A.- The corky floats your hook more which is suposed to be better for springs which swim higher than sockeye.
ichy

That spring was caught with a 3oz betty- Nothing wrong with it, you just lose your bounce sooner than a 4oz. Berry Tackle owner was using a 5oz but with a 14ft rod.
G.A.

i ran 4oz and found same thing at end of run...no bounce or very minimal. to me its to shallow once we get to the end of the swing being the water is higher right now and drops slowly there. id say the weight choice also depends on rod action on the tip to. less action is say needs more weight to feel the bounce better
ethicalbonker

I personally have always used corkies when there is less sun light because are higher in the water. Tgen i use a bead for when it is killer sunny, the fish then run lower where the water is cooler. So usually first light till 11:00 is cockie and 11:00 till 4:00 is bead, 4:00 till dark is then corkie. Im not sure others feel about this but it has worjed for me over the years,
YZ125

What do you mean by bead? Is it weighted? or can i use a tiny splitshot right at the end of the hook instead of a bead?
ethicalbonker

No a split shot would send your hook into the mud. Just a plastic trout bead or anybead the size of a pea or ball bearing.
ethicalbonker

Any u guys and gals going out tommarow? ill be there with my double lawn chair. Hope it will be a productive day. And remember GO EARLY
G.A.

should be bussy with new openings tomorrow and a weekend. lots of bug juice and go early as said. the gong show is about to begin....,lol
ichy

Heading up Monday and Tuesday - I'll try your corkie method in the morning -
You guys ever get a ticket for parking where it says "NO PARKING"? Or would you park at the scale and walk to the entrance?

I heard people were getting ticketed last year.
G.A.

says no parking at scale to. we always park as close as we can. havent seen anyone towed but hear of it.

and i was there alot last year and didnt get any tickets nor heard of any as we walked out. i think some is a few axagerating things to keep people away...not saying it doesnt happen..i know it does. just might not be as much as they say
YZ125

Heading out there either saturday evening and camping untill sunday afternoon, or monday evening to tuesday afternoon.
G.A.

wow hard core to fight them mosquitos over night...bring lots of juice for them...lol
might do an overnight to, but not till them nasty bugs are gone. good luck guys. love to be out there to
ethicalbonker

Lots of springs and socks today. Me and the wife got one, but sadly it was a white buck. It was a good morning.
ichy

Hey Ethicalbonker,
was it super busy today? Looks like I'll be heading up there myself and just wanted to know how early I have to be there for a spot.

Thanks,
YZ125

Went today this morning. Was there at 4 am and the spots were packed. Ive seen every type of asshole that there is today... Springs were being caught right by the marker and no where else. My dad and i caught 3 socks each.
ethicalbonker

Hey ichy, me and my wife leave langley at midnight. Oh and YZ i totally understand your comments re: a**holes. It seemed like there was at least one for everykind of category. There was drugies, tough guys, 20 ft leaders, drunks and even rule breakers that got ganked by DFO for fishing past the boundry. Man you just got to love combat fishing on the fraser lol. But there is always some really cool guys, i met 2 nice guys from the US.

Thomas (ethicalbonker)
ichy

I got there today at 5:30pm and the marker was packed so had to go to the right of the bushes. 1 sock and spring that got away.
I'll try again on Tuesday. Anyone going up then?
FishMasterFly

stupid computer triple post i edited it now
FishMasterFly

was out there last week and caught 1 sockeye but it was snagged and wasnt legal anyways
FishMasterFly

I have a question about bottom bouncing hopefully everyone can give me there own opinion because i am just starting out fishing the hiag scale bar.

How do you bottom bounce properly without snagging the fish anywhere else than the mouth.

Do you just throw it out and let it bounce then reel in smoothly or do you throw it out and reel in spurts? I was just curious to avoid snagging fish cause then it wouldnt be legal and total waste of time and fish should only be caught if there going to be eaten not snagged and stressed then out.
aaronwilde

I could be wrong but I don't think you can "bottum bounce properly". That is what bottum bouncing is, snagging them as the swim over your line with their mouth, I see some people yanking on the rod as it bounces though which snags other parts of their body also
FishMasterFly

There has to be away
FishMasterFly

Will the main question is how can you ensure 90% of the time that you going to hook it in the outer part of the mouth so it looks LEGAL but we all know the fish didnt BITE LOL
bently

Hey FishMasterFly,

Here's my take on it, take it only as my opinion as I'm sure there's gonna be a few on here that will disagree but hey, that's always gonna happen.

Okay here it goes,

Proper bottom bouncing technique,

1 = Using a leader no longer than 3 to 4 feet in length

2 = Using just enough weight to have it "bounce" along the river bottom at a slow and steady pace so it looks natural to the fish

3 = Use a hook that is the appropriate size for the bait/lure your using.

When we used to do this back in the day for steelhead we used a small spin-n-glow or a small chunk of roe in an egg loop knot. The leader would never "Floss" the fish, the hook would be totally engulfed by the fish most of the time as the fish were BITING YOUR OFFERING.

This technique is used in what most call "Frog Water" slow meandering parts of the river where one can get quite a long drift, not crazed, rushing water where there's only seconds to control your gear.

Flossing technique,

1 = Use a leader as long as you possibly can control when casting {the longer the leader is, the more ground you cover}

2 = Use the appropriate size of "betty" you need to have it bounce along the bottom. The current speed will dictate this for you.

3 = Use a bigger hook size that will increase your chances at Flossing the fish {5/0 to 7/0 is the norm these days from what my "floss friends" tell me}. As the leader line goes through the fishes mouth it will eventually come to the hook, if the hook is bigger, the better chance there is of it lodging itself into the side of the fishes mouth. "Usually" you'll hook the fish just on the outside of the mouth/jaw, sometimes inside the mouth too but not as much, and on some occasions you'll even find the hook in the fishes side or back. This will happen in the event that the hook whips back downstream at the precise time when the hook is nearing the fishes mouth/head. Sometimes you'll just snag the fish anywhere on it's body too, because of the abundance of fish in the area your fishing.

4 = Tuffs of wool, little corkies, beads, a piece of shoe leather, your girl friends broken nail, any of these will produce the same amount of fish when using this method of fishing. Some people use corkies all the time as it lifts your hook just off the bottom and reduces the chance of snagging the bottom and losing your gear.

That's it in a nutshell. Remember one thing though,

"ANY FLOSSED FISH IS A FOUL HOOKED FISH, IF IT'S NOT BITING, IT'S FOUL HOOKED......PERIOD!!!!

BTW, I have and never will use this technique even though it's absolutely, totally legal. I wish it wasn't but.......

I know many people {ya some are friends}that do use this way of fishing and have seen many different set ups but too each his own when rigging their gear.

Have fun and don't drown. It can be deadly when wading the rivers, especially the "Mighty Fraser"
G.A.

you dont even know the meaning to foul hooked. it doesnt mean any flossed fish. its the outter mouth or body. should read the regs before spouting bad info again, your how to do this is out to lunch also, why would a floss or B.B give accurate advice anyways. and one that doesnt even participate.
G.A.

most reasons guys pull it as it is still bouncing is it has slowed or stopped giving proper bounce to the wright...like a snag or rock. it lists it off the obstacle.
you dont need a long leader as the hatter posted. those are the poaching type fishermen. and dont need the huge hooks. guess his buddies are the snagging poaching type then. no wonder he labels all flosser/B.B. the same
right now its chinook open so yes using the right colours for them as it is them we are trying to target, so it may help with an actual bite rather than te flossed line as it happens with ALL sockeye no mater the method. an sock is snagged as it was put as they dont bite. so its either flowing right in it mouth or its flossed in it. i dont see any diff but seems some do

fishing isnt that hit right now from our day at the bar so its just patience guy to get the right hooked fish. 2 of us hooked and released 6 sockeye 0 chinook......

lots way above the boundry again to and dfo and cops flying all day right over watching...good luck with tat any of you guys reading. the bar was empty...was your problem. good way to get the whole bar shut down for all of us that make an effort to keep to rules...and you give us a bad name on the dam forums to....,lol
bently

Figures you'd spout off, what a rookie.

If you actually think that a color of wool is making a difference when BBing the scale bar, your delusional jack.

Another thing, if you think I'm gonna have a intraweb fight with you, think again,. You can try an belittle my opinions all you want but since your oblivious to how this method "actually works" you'll obviously have something negative to say every time I post.

Now go back to your moonshine Bumbly and take your BS with ya.
ichy

Fishing is suppose to be a fun sport - you guys sound like you're in your teens...

Just curious, if bbing is LEGAL, why do you hate it so much? Not everyone is PRO fisherman on this site.

I'm going to the scale tomorrow and i'm going to BOTTOM BOUNCE DAMNIT!!!!!!
Fish'n BC

Great post Bently!

Another lesser used technique of flossing is called "fly flossing", normaly done with fly fishing gear. It is essentialy flossing using a sinking fly line or lead core line instead of the betty weight, a fly would then be used at the end to snag the fish and keep the hook off the bottom. The type or color of fly doesn't matter of course, as long as it has a large barbless hook.

Ichy - I don't think Bently or anyone else has a problem with bbing, nor did he indicate in any way that he had a problem with bottom bouncing. I beleive it's FLOSSING that he isn't a fan of. You should read carefuly before you post a reply.
G.A.

well if you think that a piece of green wool that is a chinook colour goes right past its heads that it doesnt increase odds of it attacking it them you are the delusional one. i never said its a for sure but it sure as hell does increase odds for springs.
im oblivious to how it works???.serious??..im out there all the time doing this and you dont...ad im dont know???..realy?. then dont fight a fight on a topic you dont even participate in/. you hate this style so why even make an attempt to help this guy with info. youd only give tha hate info to discourage others. you need to get over the fact this isnt illegal. those that dont do this style i dont even know why they look in a scale bar thread when thats what we do there. you looking for someone to say they had a great day float fishing or bar fishing?

i wasnt the negtive one dood with how you explained this to the other guy. it isnt how we fish there either..maybe its how your slaughter buddies did but not everyone.

im not trying to stir ths again either. just wanted to get the real info to the guy, your opinion on this fishery means shit to me and those that do this, when its illegal then ill change.
moonshine??...sorry not all of us are drunks. i dont touch the shit, need to stop telling me what to do to.

time to go sturg fish some more...

yes, and time to end the mudslinging. bentley, please ignore this and, as you said, not enter into a net war with this member.

Hey guys,

Could you confirm if Socks are now open? I just called and checked the bc fishery website and I'm not seeing any restrictions on them socks.....

Am I looking at the wrong place or is this true?
Fish'n BC

As per the last meeting of the fraser pannel on July 27th; "there are no planned commercial or recreational sockeye fisheries". There has been no posted changes since then.

Zero sockeye retention at this time for the commercial/recreational sectors.

Sorry Chris, we were obviously posting at the same time.

LOL i ask one question and everyone starts bashing each other behind there keyboard. Lets all get along and enjoy our recreational fishing ok . All i wanted to know was your guys technique for bottom bouncing to catch fish properly. There is lots of mix opinion but now at least i got better knowledge when i hit the river this week.
FishMasterFly

Has anyone ever fished on other side of haig scale bar opposite side. I notice that there is easy road access and there is fishing markers on both sides so is it open for fishing or is it private land
Nano93

I agree with bently on this. As I see this flossing is to fishing as road hunting is to hunting. You have your two groups, the elitist and the joe blows who think its the only way. some were here you need to find the Happy medium were you can admit its a way to get meat but it's not the propped way.
bently

Ah well, if people want to harvest their fish by flossing, all the power to them, it's a legal and very productive way to fish so as long as it is, there will be people doing it.

Truthfully speaking, with poor water clarity it's probably the only way one will catch salmon right now in the Fraser. I'm not saying you can't catch them right now in a traditional way but your chances of say "Bar Fishing" are very low on the scale compared to the Floss. There's a few being caught but not many. Hopefully it will improve {it is more and more everyday}as I'm dying to get the boat out and enjoy some summer bar fishing with my wife and my friends.

I think the biggest problem me and many others see with this flossing is that people who do it on the Fraser River bring the same method to other smaller rivers as they have had huge success with it, and for some, it's basically the only way they have ever tried as a lot of the fishermen you see on the Fraser these days are quite new to the scene/sport. Of course there are others that are experienced anglers that just do it because it's the easiest way to get some fish. Justifiably so I guess, I mean it's legal and it works like a hot dam so why not eh. {gotta give an eye roll here, lollol}.

For instance, when you go to the Vedder or the Chehalis rivers, the fish are most of the time, "willing to bite" your presentation, but many still think that flossing is the way to go. Hopefully they will see that it is actually an expensive way to fish once they get started because the bottom is not always the small gravel/sand bottom like the upper reaches of the Fraser are and subsequently they will lose a lot more gear than they would in the Fraser. Fingers crossed anyway !!LOLLOLLOL>

I think that if more people actually tried to fish with a more customary way, IE: float fishing etc etc , that they would enjoy it even more so as they now know that the fish are biting what they are throwing out there, and besides, when you have say 2 float fishermen short floating roe in a stretch of river and then the flosser comes along, it can ruin the run for the bait fisherman as a lot of time the fish will get spooked {yes this happens for you that disagree}. Another reason is that when you see your float go down with a good "HIT", it's a lot more exciting than the other way IMO.

Where the problem lies with flossing is how to get people "NOT" to floss on the smaller systems. I have heard many people give their ideas as to how you are able to have legal flossing on the Fraser but not on the estuaries that branch of of her but I have yet to here one that will actually work.

Gear restrictions will not work, it's too big of a grey zone, people will find ways around it very easily. Fly fishing only will not work, as you can still floss fish this way and it wouldn't be fair to a good percentage of the angling community {a lot don't fly fish}. The ban on Bouncing Betty style weights will not work as it's another grey zone, people will indubitably find another source to use in regards to a weight that tumbles along the bottom.

In a nutshell, as long as the method is legal, you will still see people applying it to the way they fish. I for one do not know of a way to stop it and am not going to waste my energy on it either. I just choose not to floss, and if I can teach a person here and there that they don't "need" to floss the smaller systems, that will be my contribution to ending it.
bently

Wrong!!!!!!!

I've got a paralyzed friend who has a special permit to "SHOOT" out of his truck, let alone just go road hunting, so it not illegal. Of course you cannot shoot from your vehicle unless your in these circumstances but I can drive down the road in hunting season and if I see a legal animal I want to shoot, I can get out of the truck and Bang Flop it anytime within shooting hours. Totally legal, as long as your in a safe hunting zone {see the regs for the certain MU your hunting}

To me that's road hunting.

You need to read a lot slower and quit getting upset, your like a mad crab foaming from the mouth, LOLLOLLOL

BTW, Leader restrictions won't work either, it's way to easy to manipulate if you have any brains.

AS for all your other garbage about a 2 foot ditch and everyone killing eggs and the just about everything else you said, I don't think anyone expected anything different , coming from you.

I'm sure if you carry with your barrage it will get nixed by our moderator.
Fish'n BC

GA- road hunting isn't illegal, unless you are doing it at night with spotlights. I do it on un-named logging roads myself, no we don't shoot from a vehicle. Sockeye fishing for which flossing was developed has only been open on the fraser a little over 8 years, prior to that flossing was unheard of on our river systems. I didn't find Bently bashing anything, I thought his post was informative.
bently

The permit given to my friend has stipulations that go along with it. He needs at least one other person with him that is legal to hunt. Obviously this person would be taking care of the downed animal. If you don't know, don't act like you do cause it seems to me your clueless about hunting too.

You can shoot from a road as long as your inside the proper MU, and it's within the shooting zone of that said MU, with the exception of mainlines and highways. Cat grades and logging roads are good to go.

Buddy shot a moose on Lily Lake rd last year and the CO happened to come around the corner about 15 minutes later, he actually helped with the loading the animal.

I'm done with ya Bumbly, you made an ass out of yourself once again, congrats on your success. LOLLOL
bently

Maybe you didn't read the part where we talked about safe{Legal} shooting zones within certain MU's.

Give it a rest Bumbly, your out of your league.
Fish'n BC

Sockeye take lures in clear water, they use lures and bait (esp shrimp and prawns) on the Columbia (inluding bar fishing) and Harrison rivers. Some have been caught on the fraser barfishing as well, in fact I caught one last year while spincasting for pinks...rare yes, but it is possible.
Fish'n BC

Ya I saw a lot of snaggers out on the stave snagging rotting chum last year, never saw the point of it. You can get a lot of chrome chum in nicomen and the later Harrison run though.

River salmon bite out of agression, defence and feed on other salmon's eggs. If they didn't, no one would catch anything bar fishing. They are catching manny sockeye on the columbia barfishing with spin n glo's and prawns, they are also catching manny by trolling. So they do feed in river systems.
bently

Good post Chris !!

I guess I must be snagging sockeye when I'm using dry lines and dry flies on the many Island rivers I fish on every year I go over too. While I'm actually there to target pink salmon I get quite a few sockeye that come up and hit dries too.

Hot Rod just posted a video of him and his wife short floating for Chinnook and Sockeye using cured prawns and krill/plankton. They were very successful, no snagged fish at all.
Fish'n BC

Just a reminder for everyone; if the hook is down the throat of a fish you have to release - do not try to remove it (barbless or not) the line should be cut and the fish released with the hook left in.
FishMasterFly

hey g.a. so there is inst any restrictions to no fishing on the other side cause i only see like 2 properties way at the other end and there is a closer road to park but landing a fish from there looks dangerous cause of big rocks

Nano93

Road hunting is not illegal as long as you get out of the truck befor you shoot. Guys do it every year they curse logging roads looking for game
ichy

Hey ChrisS,

What's the reason for cutting the line if the hook is caught in the throat? If it's barbless, slide it out... ??
ChakaRaka

Often you cannot get the hook out of the throat of especially smaller fish. Doing so will cause damage to the internals and/or gills. If you leave a hook in, the fish will eventually reject it and spit it out. In the ocean it will likely rust even before that. It is way better than any sort of yanking to save such a cheap piece of tackle.
Fish'n BC

Also as per page 11 of the provincial regulations and page 10 of the federal regulations; for proper catch and release.
