was fishing around the tsawwassen coal ports/ferry terminal and there are these tiny little fish jumping, was just curious if anyone knows what they are?

Smelts maybe, they are doing their beach spawning right now. Probably jumping because a larger fish (salmon) is feeding on them.

They are closed now 'til middle of Aug., then you can use a gill net or dip net. I use a 35' gill net off the beach.

Hmm, seeing as all of this smelt netting business is new to me, what do you do with them then? Eat like sardines or what?

I just pan fry them like I would trout. These are larger and firmer than sardines and not oily at all. Sometimes I eat the bones too, just depending on the size.
You set the net about an hour before high tide to about an hour after high tide. They come in with the tide to spawn in the gravel on the beach. Some people like to dip net for them off the Stanley Park seawall at high tide.
I started back when I was a kid, everything was good back then. Then in later years there was conflicts between the sport and comercial fishermen (with their 200'+ nets), so now they have the weeks split half and half between sport and comercial fishermen.
They close the season from mid June to mid Aug during the peak spawning period.

They are great pan fried,you can put them in a tomatoe sauce to cook them and pour that over rice .
It's just another way for me to get out by the water.
I was one of those commercial fishermen in my youth so I miss the water ,ahhh what a way to make a living!!!!
I know this is a sport fishing site but as long as we all respect our catch things should work out..........
Now I get to do with my son what my dad and I got to share
