I once heard it said: the only dumb question is the one that wasn't asked.

Thanks Chris! ^ By the way i am a newbie to salmon fishing and i had a really good time float fishing the stave last season and i am just wondering when is the next time the chums will be in the stave. I do not see how that is a dumb question? What is so dumb about it? Not everyone is as good as you....

Ha , busted. You were serious!I know everyone isnt as good as me. My friends are, some are even better but we all know when the chums are in the stave. They come the same time every year, can you remember when you were there fishing?

Google works great as well for any worried about gettin roasted for asking a question that some may see as "dumb"
It was my first river salmon season last year as well but I just did plenty of research and reading so I knew when they were in, usual best months/part of months for each of the species in each of the different waters that I was going to be fishing, regs, limits, presentations, etc, etc.
May have asked a few "dumb" questions as well but only on things that I couldn't find sufficient info on myself via scouring the forums and the rest of the web.....and now even after just one season I am quite confident in my ability to run with the best of em...)well as far as level winds and spinning outfits go anyways but thats a whole different subject, lol)... only made it out for salmon maybe 12-15days last season but not one day was I skunked and it was always multiple fish days...some may say luck and im sure that was maybe a part to do with it but no denying that all the hard work/research/reading I put into it before going was the main factor....as well as being an avid river fisher for other species i'm sure didn't hinder me either, lol.....also I should mention that much of my success also came from others points, suggestions, answers to my questions and some that were nice enough to show me a smokin hole or 2 ;-)

Actualy they start coming in the Stave in late Sept, but they don't seem to start biting until Thanksgiving. Then the bite on til end of November, even though they are in the system well into December. The Stave chum are quite colored with chrome chum few and far between, if you drive a little further to the Nicomen Slough you will find most of the chum still chrome. Float fishing is done there too, but I find small pink spinners like a wedding band on a spinning rod works equaly well in both locations and picks up the odd coho as well.
