Author Topic: Question about the border at Osoyoos Lake

I've booked a vacation for 5 nights at Haynes Point in early June and may want to fish and have lunch in Orville. From what I've read I'll need a $16 "I-68" to land south of the border and to get it I need to go in person to the border crossing for the inspection.
My question is: Is my Boaters Licence and Fishing Licence OK at the south end of the Lake?
And do I have to take my 10' 2hp Portabote to the crossing for inspection? Do I need my boat registration?

you cross the markers at the Canadian - American side and you are in American waters and subject to American laws. From what I understand, as soon as you touch land you are required to make contact with the US border agency. That's the way it is in Canada, but no guarantee on USA. From what I understand, I also know ships are required to report 24 hours in advance of their arrival. keep in mind ships means big boats entering USA waters.

This all just sounds like way more hassle than it could possibly be worth. But different strokes I guess...

I fish Osoyoos quite often and also love to fish the US side for pig largemouth & smallmouth. As long as you don't set foot on US ground or anchor on US lake bottom you are not trespassing and are allowed to navigate the US waters. I checked with the orville and canadian border crossing in osoyoos and this is also exactly what they told me. Have fun exploring the US waters, they are pretty good!!!!! I have done the same thing on a couple lower mainland lakes.

not sure how it works on that lake but ive been hastled big timne as a kid going to white rock. went out in a rubber dingy and apperently they where watching me and came rushing out to grab me as soon as i went over the invisible line out in the ocean. was quite the event for just a couple dumb kids about 13 years old in a dingy doing nothing wrong...with a school field trip...man did we get shit from customs guys. got hauled back to shore then taken in for questioning and had school and parents called in to. made out like we were some big time drug smugglers...lol. not sure if laws changed or if its diff in a lake but they sure do have imaginary lines you cant cross in the ocean. maybe its just cause they realy dont have the staff to monitor to much there.???
id deffinatly call and find out more facts cause they sure dont like us in their waters

Thanx for the advice. Edzzed & rydogg you guys are right and ChakaRaka too, "too much hassle", I felt like a military satelite was hovering above me watching for smuggling. Besides Oroville looks so trailer trash with all the graffiti on the cliffs behind the city, and their parks are disappointing compared to Haynes Point. As far as my fishing went. Nada. But it was an OK trip, would have been spectacular if the weather and the fish had cooperated more.

Too bad it did not live up to your expectations. But at least you went and found out...so many places you don't really know until you go check it out.
