Hi guys i want to buy my dad a present for his birthday. I am looking for a spinning rod medium to heavy action for all types of salmon. It has to be light enough for float fishing for salmon like coho chum chinook with not too much bend in the rod, but heavy enough to bottom bounce for sockeyes with a 4oz bouncing betty. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

I would check out Quantum's new coldwater salmon/steelhead series rods, the MH 9' seems to be a good do everything salmon spinning rod. A review is available at www.guidebc.com/tackletales/coldwater.asp and I beleive Wholesale Sports has them on sale for $52.00.

Thanks alot! However do you think it will be strong enough for big salmon, lets say 30pounds, and can i use 50lb main for bottom bouncing with it?

Well; they were catching chinooks up to 40 lbs with it, not sure the braid rating of the rod. You might also want to consider a good bar rod to meet both your heavy and light weight fishing needs. I found my old 11' Berkley bar rod works well for all you listed and more, even though I generaly prefer lighter weight rods.

i would prefer a 10 1/2 or 11 ft rod. i have 2 10 1/2 ft quantum convergers that have handled any salmon i have shown them ! the longer rod makes casting and float fishing a lot easier than the 9 ft.

I made up my mind and bought a Shakespeare Two-Piece Extra Heavy Action Ugly Stik Lite Salmon Steelhead Spinning Rod, 9-Feet" i think its the best of both worlds, strong, durable and soft enough for float fishin salmon, well atleast thats what they advertise. Have you guys ever heard of this rod, is it any good?

Looks like a good rod and action for most everything you want it to do. Ugly Stik rods seem to have a good reputation and warrantee, but I don't like the Shakespear reels. Tight lines!
