FOUND AN OLD SPOOL OF FISHING LINE IN MY CLOSET. DEBATING WHETHER I SHOULD CHUCK IT, USE IT FOR LEADER LINE OR PUT IT ON A REEL.
kelso

I say use it. I've never had a problem using older line, I mean if it is not all rotten and what not. Do you're own break test on it, if it is 15# test get something that weighs 15 pounds and test it. hope this helps.

How old is old?
cagey

age is important but also whether it was exposed to heat/cold, sunlight etc. if i was fishing for steelhead i would not use it. if i was fishing some small lake for 2 lb trout i would use it (if there was a 10 lb'er lurking in that lake though.....it would hurt to loose a trophy !
as kelso said, test it. if it has been in your closet since new it could be ok. 5 years is no big deal if not exposed to the elements.

I agree- factors play in to it. If you think about it, for all we know, when we buy "new line", how new is it anyways? Sure, it's new from when we buy it, but how long has it been in that shop for, and how long has it been on the shelf in the warehouse that distributes it, and how long ago did it get there from where it was made...

OKAY COOL. IT'S MAYBE 3=4 YEARS OLD. I HAVE NOT USED BLUE LINE IN A WHILE. BUT IT STILL HAS THE WRAPPER ON IT. I HATE WASTING THINGS IF IT IS STILL GOOD. THANKS

Just a question Beefeater......do you have some form of internet tourette's that cause you to yell all the time or is your keyboard caps lock stuck or something?? Lmao! ;p ......just curious, lol
BEEFEATER

MY ANSWERS TO THAT QUESTION OFTEN CAUSE WARS. BUT I TRY AND KEEP MY POSTS SHORT, ON TOPIC AND NO BS. I'M JUST HERE TO LEARN A FEW THINGS AND BE A BETTER FISHER

NOONE QUESTIONS WHAT YOU SAY BUT WHY DO YOU YELL?

I once dated a woman and told her if she ever got mad at me, do not yell. There is nothing wrong with my hearing that yelling is ever required. All I can say is there is nothing wrong with my eyes. So why the CAPS. And the line, Line is cheap. When in doubt, chuck it out.
mzmann

hmmmmm....."my answers to that question often cause wars"???.....really, lol.......only thing I can think of with an answer like that is that you want your posts to be noticed and that you think THE YELLING MAYBE MAKES PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION/ANSWER SOONER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT??........I dunno if its just me (highly doubt it though) but I find it very annoying, lol....ALMOST to the point of funny as it makes one wonder if its some sort of internet typing "condition" you have, lol

Maybe try it without the caps from now on and you won't continue to get flack for it all the time!...just a thought though, lol.
kelso

I think the caps lock are his trademark. let it be.

It is because I am deaf, thank you that somebody speaks louder so that I can hear.

But yes each to their own and it is inoffensive in mho.

As for fishing line, mine is not old enough for me to comment, but if I do pick up and old vintage reel, I will always replace the line as a matter of course.
