saw a couple of guys in a corner of jewel lk (near falkland ) enjoying an early day of ice fishing. the middle was awful thin to non-existent but there were few patches that were safe. it is a long winter. WAIT FOR THE ICE TO BE SOLID !

what is the minnimum ice thickness one should trust?

if it is good ice 3 or 4 inches is good. if it is slush frozen and refrozen then who knows.
