I think that, from my experience, using those enormous worms work perfectly for fishing bass. Also, I notice that it may be unnecessary to go out to the middle of the lake if there are docks. Bass have been known to hide under docks as well.
Hope this helps with any beginner bass fishers!

You want to fish drop offs, current breaks and anywhere that has some cover. In the winter you will want to move to deeper water and present your bait on the bottom very slow. Always vary your retrieve and lure action before changing your baits, sometimes all it will take is a slight increase or decrease in speed to get them to bite. I mainly look for drop offs or depth changes as this is where they will hang out to search for food, always look for some sort of cover as they will be foraging around these areas.
