anybody know where to get the letters that stick on to your boat to show the licence number?

We bought ours in Cdn Tire (mail boxes etc isle), or Home Depot, again mail boxes, house numbers isle - any sticky letters-numbers will do the job

You can also hit a sign shop and get custom cut vinyl. Just be sure they're contrasting colour, at least 3" block and, when you put them on, dont make the mistake *so many others* do, they don't go at the transom (despite this being the place where they look the best). They are required to be as close to the bow as practicable (ie, as close to the bow as they can easily be read)

Finally a post that warrants a reply!

I agree with Chewy about the source, size and colour selection. The generic letters you get at hardware stores are barely adequate to stick to the side of a house (out of the weather) so they are not ideal for marine application. However there is more to it than just going to any sign shop. If you hit up a sign shop you want to try to go more so with a print shop that specializes in automotive graphics. Not all vinyls are created equal (or intended for every application). If you go this route I would request auto-wrap material made by a reputable manufacturer: 3M, Avery, Oracal etc. That material is intended for high UV and moisture applications because it is what is used to wrap cars with full coverage graphics. Cut lettering can be printed to any color and then overlaminated. I also highly recommend that if you are going to go to the effort to have this made of the correct material, that you also have a professional install it to ensure proper adhesion and longevity of the install. If not, then at least buy a few sets of letters because do-it-yourselfers will have to replace them sooner or later. Or may mess the first set up, while trying to install. If you wish to discuss this further and especially if you are in the Okanagan, feel free to contact me through the websites shown in my picture. I am not really advertising here as much as showing proper application and offering some advice from someone in the industry.
