Topic: Centerpin v Fly |

Anyone knowledgable enough to convince me that there is enough of a difference between a Centerpin and a Fly Reel to make one not a substitute for the other.

Why? Are not the fishing methods similar, is the reel just somewhere to wind the line.

put some mono on a fly reel and try casting as you would a center pin

I found this on the www:
"In many ways it is simply an oversized large arbor fly reel that rides on bearing races and plays fish without the use of a mechanical drag."
and the method:
How do I fight fish?
"The old fashioned way, of course! Common fish fighting methods involved “palming” the rim of the spool, resistance by way of the thumb or fingers,"

So now I am wondering if I could use a Center Pin for fly fishing. And thanks bently (great answer) and all so far.....

Wish I was, been off the stuff for a while.
I never think there is a best way for anything, there is always a better way, so that is why I look for answers to what may seem to be rather odd questions.
In the meantime should I go for this:

I'll make it a present if my bid is accepted, but you must promise to show me how to use it.
.... as he slips silently into the background and waits for the magic moment of the New Year.

that thing is a piece of junk. Honestly if you take the time, you can score some actual vintage pin reels of quality from the UK Ebay for 10-20 pounds on the cheap side. Shipping is about 7-10 pounds.

Hahah, I meant for the same price range you could get a better reel, not saying that the cheaper ones are junk cause they tend to catch the same amount of fish at the end of the day

yeah i am just learning how to fish

Thank you for your input pinhead. I have considered that and will probably go that way. You did in fact miss the point that "if my bid is accepted". I am sure you all can catch fish better than I can..........

hey if we're all fishing the "right" way then it just comes down to who's lucky enough to cast to where a fish just happens to be hangin' out, a wee bit o' luck me thinks

So if it spins freely and has a clicker and does not have drag it must be a Center Pin.
