Hi,
First time poster here. I will be temporarily relocating to Vancouver in two weeks, and was wondering if someone could give me a brief overview of what to expect with regards to flyfishing in the Vancouver area.
Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what fly fishing gear to pack.
I'm a California native, and I primarily flyfish for trout in streams, occassionaly lakes. I fish smaller streams with a 3wt, and larger ones with a 5wt. I have a 7wt, but haven't touched it in years (the steelhead fishing in California is hit or miss, mostly the latter).
Everything I found online seems to suggest that steelhead and salmon are the species to target in the area. How far does one have to travel to fish for trout?
And what time of year does the trout fishing get going? How about the dry-fly fishing?
This relocation is very last-minute, so I haven't had much time to do much research. To top things off, I'll be out of town on business for 10 of the next 14 days before relocating, so I'm trying to pack my belongings ASAP. I will eventually get a book on fishing BC waters, but that won't help me with my current dilema.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Welcome to BC! I'm afraid I'm not able to provide too much info on fly fishing, as I've barely started learning about it, but, you can fish for trout, rainbows and cutthroat, in many of the same streams/rivers as for salmon. Salmon fishing is pretty well done for now, but steelhead season is getting started. Apparently, the two best waters for steelhead around the Lower Mainland are the Vedder/Chilliwack River, and the Chehalis River. Trout can be found in most any stream/river, and there are quite a few lakes that are fairly recently stocked. Go to www.gofishbc.com for a list of lakes recently stocked. Go to www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/ for info on licenses and regulations. The home page on this site can provide directions/maps. You might also want to try a few other websites that cover the Lower Mainland/BC, and you will find many other links on these sites, including guide services.

Welcome to Canada, enjoy your stay and clean up after yourself please.
I would pack both ur 3wt & 5wt for your trip. There will be times when you can use them both. I have never flyfished in streams for trout but I do allot of flyfishing in our local lakes. Buntzen Lake is a very good lake to fish however you would need a boat or a canoe to get into the good action. There are canoe rentals at this lake and dont cost very much.

The Skagit river is an hour and a half from Vancouver, great for the 3wt, rainbows and Dolly Varden are in it, the Harrison river is about an hour away from Van, cutthroat trout and whitefish are in it all year along with Dolly's, salmon is done for the year.Stealhead are in now till March on the Chilliwack/Vedder systems an hour away from Van.

Thanks for the responses. I've been insanely busy getting ready to go, and haven't had a chance to check back. I leave on Monday morning, and I already feel like I'm packing too much stuff, so I'm considering bringing along less fly-fishing gear, or having it shipped to me at a later date.
Does the fishing improve later in the season? Down here in California, the mountain streams generally fish best in May/June during dry years, and July/August in wet years. How about BC streams?
If fishing is hot now, I'll have no choice but to bring along my fly-fishing gear, waders and all. But if it'll only get better in the coming months, I think I'd actually prefer to have my gear shipped to me later.
Any thoughts appreciated.
By the way, I'm from San Francisco. I'd love to bring along some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but my luggage is already heavier than I'd like!

hehe. I like SN Pale Ale, but I could certainly live without it. I'm sure I'll be plenty happy drinking the local brews :-)
I've decided to pack a couple rods, a couple reels, a few boxes a flies and leaders, and my vest. I'll have my waders shipped to me at a later date.
Off to YVR tomorrow morning!
