I just started fishing and have been out about 6 or 7 times now. Have been to Capilano River at the mouth and the hatchery, Rice Lake, Fraser River in Maple Ridge, Alouette River and several times have seen many fish jumping all around me but have not caught anything. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have used roe, herring, worms, shrimp and artificial baits. Does anyone know a shore fishing spot near Maple Ridge that I will actually catch something? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I know the feeling. I would assume these are trout jumping? this isnt the best time of year for bait for trout anyway, the fish are too stuffed from the bugs in the water to care. i will assume you are using a spining set up, the best thing is to fish a fly under a float i recomend adjusta bubble floats, with one small split shot about a foot or so from the hook the reason for these floats is they allow you to balance them by adding water inside, which gives you the weight needed to cast. stop by a local fishing shop and ask for some advice on fly selection. salmon are another matter roe sacks are working right now, they should be float fished under a foam float or if in clear water a stealth or drennan, if the water is deep consider slip floating, a tackle shop could elaborate there are many ways to do so. remember if you see fish jumping they are biting its just a matter of what, try early in the morning and late in the evening(general rule). if you try salmon fishing, i would sugest the opening of a creek or stream entering the fraser, p.s. leader length need be no more than 24", anything longer will floss sockeye which are illegal to retain right now.
