Hey so I havent been on here lately but figured Id ask.. me and my brother dont drive and have the opportunity to get dropped at Stave or another lake nearby 30 minutes or so from Mission with a canoe to camp for a week. I was thinking of paddling out around the corner up Stave lake to where its actuslly deep.. not the mud flat area. Ive fished the mud flats area lots and always got pike minnow.. i was thinking maybe at a small creek mouth on the west side of the actual deep area we could paddle to and camp and fish.. i was wondering if its even worth it though? We are going as a fishing trip. I know theres a few small lakes around but we like seclusion (not poaching, just dont like gong shows). Anyway.. info would be much appreciated. We would be fly fishing spinning and maybe bring worms. You could also email me if you dont want the info to be too public.. aaron_chip@hotmail.com
We were thinking in early june. We dont get the chance to camp or fish places out of the city much since neither kf us have vehicles yet.. Thanks so much in advanced.. ive got local knowledge of how to slay bar fishing or sturgeon fishing from shore too if ya wanted to exchange info 
were also open to other nearby lakes but i figured staves best. Cheers!

You might find your camping site taken. Stave Lake gets awful busy!
Did the same basic trip many times when your age. If the weather is good and you are during the week you should be ok. I am sure you know how quick the wind can come up .The last time I was up there, about 15 years ago at least, I was amazed how all my old camping spots were taken. Never had that problem in my 20's.

Thx for the reply . Was the fishing any good back then? Ive only managed pike minnow from the mud flats area lol. Its that busy on a weekend thst the lake sppts are all taken?? Its not pay camping right, just paddle up and set up camp wherever?

Like I said, it has been years but yes, I used to catch lots of trout fishing the channel as opposed to the mud flats. There are nice spots to camp where it opens up into the lake. Just be prepared for company on weekends at least.

Me and my family take our boat to stave often, and its not uncommon for us to stop and fish. however we've never caught anything but pike minnow.

Well as a change of events our ride offered to take us up to Shea lake to camp and fish for a week. We won't have a vehicle, just being dropped. Unfortunately the BC parks website says Shea is CLOSED due to the forestry road being washed out.
I was doing a lot of research and found that maybe Davis lake, down beside Boss lake, just below Shea, would be a good alternative? We have a Canoe. This is a fishing trip so really it doesn't matter so much about anything else. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'd love to try some Chronomids under my 6 wt in the canoe :D. I'm getting excited now that I know we get to fish this area.
Aiming for beginning of June. Will probably go Tuesday to Tuesday so we get a full week :D

Thanks for the reply.. Loons eh, sneaky devils haha. That's what I was afraid of hearing.. that it'll be super noisy/busy. Any suggestions for nearby lakes that wouldn't be so annoying? We'd be fine with getting dropped off and Canoeing our camp gear across a lake and camping where ever. I doubt we can go to Shea since it's CLOSED/washed out road?

So everything is set for June 13th- June 20th, Last thing we're struggling to figure out is firewood. We can get dropped at Kane lake/Harmon lake camp sites, but are we allowed to collect wood from around the area? Can we buy it? There is absolutely no number to call to get a hold of the forestry camp keeper guys.. sometimes they sell firewood? :s....

Aaron, I was up at Kane this weekend. Nothing at Chicken Ranch, which is a shame as it is reportedly stocked with Brookies.
Decent fishing at Englishman. Nothing big but plenty of fish in the 12-16 inch range. If the hatch does not change silver with red rib, black head in size 14-16.

Wow thanks foe the tips! I think the firewood rule is stupid too.. that you need a permit to legally collect wood. I read that the land up there where we want to camp is leased out by the forestry sector of bc to the cattle ranches up there for the heards to free roam and graze. Hopefully no ome bothers us bout collectimg some wood. We domt need a fire.. we want to fish fire be nice though after its dark for an hour. Awesome that ya were uo there knn! Cant wait to try it. Itll be 2 more weeks so hopefully that patteen works then too . Ill tie a bunch of flies.

I have heard that of all the Kane lakes, Harman provides the most consistent fishing, with some fish of a good size in the 2-4 lbs range.
I avoided it this weekend because the camp sites were zoo's, with the constant sound of dirt bikes, quads and gun shots. It was like the wild wild west!
An instabrag post confirmed that small chromies were also the go to fly on Harman.

@gearbox, do you have any suggestions for Chicken? I hear that brook trout are particularly tasty fish and would like to try a couple.
Perhaps a big old worm under a float or a shrimp flavored Jensen egg under an indicator?
I'm not sure if I'm kidding.....

I have only just started still-water fishing in earnest this year and had been eying the Voight Valley lakes, but had heard they were also very popular and a bit of a zoo.
I'm just putting in my time and trying to figure it out lake by lake. I really enjoyed Englishman once I had figured out the right chroni. Hope to try Harman soon, some time when it is quieter during the week.

Yeah most times ive ran into bears I havent had any problems.. they usually pretend to not even notice me and keep goimg about their business. I dont usually have any means of defence on me other than a small knife (asif that will stop them). My brother has bear spray though. We wont have a vehicle to lock our food in so thats my main bear concern.. i was thinking of tieing it up in a tree while were out fishing all day and during night maybe sleep with the food? Lol. Hopefully its not too gong show the few days durimg the week that were there. Hopefully no one bitches if we collect fire wood either but oh well xD. Cant wait to go!! There is a few hike in lakes in the lower mainland that i believe have brookies.. forget if its the seymour area lakes or coquitlam.

Gearbox, if you can direct Knnn to such a spot I will nominate you for Member of the Year! I have fished such spots many times but they are getting harder to find. Used to love to hike in to a few spots.
Aaron, I'd suggest you listen to Gearbox If you want to sleep with your food, you may well be what the bear eats, not your food! Have a great time and catch lots of fish on your trip.

Hahaha. Thanks for the advice. I wont sleep with the food. If the bear does eat our food were fuked tho. Im going to try and toss a rope over a branch and haul the food up. Hopefully theres some trees thst have long thick high branches that a bear cant reach around that area lol.

I have since heard from 2 other anglers who have struggled with Chicken Ranch over the past couple of years, which appears to confirm your observation about ice fishing.
Are there any other, non-secret, lakes that you could recommend I try that contain Brook Trout, such as Edith or Edna?

I understand totally how you feel, Gearbox. I moved to Vernon in 1980 and quickly discovered magnificent fishing for wild rainbow in high mountain lakes. Most places I fished had noone at all fishing.
As time passed most of my secret spots became known. I'd see signs someone had been there then it got obvious as more and more people found my secrets. ATV's suddenly became common place and my secret places were no more. The wild rainbow and brood trout were SOO good! I can't eat the "modern day" trout we catch. The hordes of people who invade the bush today with no respect for the environment . I am afraid I understand the need to stop people collecting firewood etc. No one respects what we were given. I disagree that they patrol the OK better. There is no enforcement anywhere. Things have to change.

Yeah it's sad that most people have no regard for anything other than themselves, the environment always gets the worst end of the deal.
I'm just waiting for a bunch of forest fires to start from all the complete morons who have no regard for anything other than getting drunk and/or partying. I fucking hate forest fires.. I would never risk one happening. I understand accidents but all these fires started across BC by random idiots during fire ban is just saddening. Then we get to breathe the unhealthy smoke. Brutal! Enjoy the nature while it lasts.
I was tought to leave the place how it was when you got there, and if you can even collect others garbage and leave it cleaner than when you arrived even better! If everyone lived by such simple and respectful principals the world would be a very different place.
A few less known spots, dare I even say legitimately secret (no one but me and my family/friends ever goes there) on the Fraser around Mission has for the last 8 years been a total garbage dump to local druggies. It only gets worse and worse!

My trip was awesome, thanks! Ended up in Vought Valley and caught tons of rainbows! Biggest to the boat was about 2.5 or 3 lbs but we caught far too many to count! Had some success with fly fishing, lures, and worms. Great place!
Didn't see any bears and we left food out often even. Saw a bit of old bear poop. Seems pretty good up there as it's a bit of a gong show of motor homes /etc on some of the lakes. We got lucky and had the lake to ourselves. Mosquitos however were pretty bad all the time and really bad before dark. Didn't stop us though :P
