Hi everyone. I like to fish, but I've only every tried bait fishing, mostly in Ontario and the east coast. Heading up to Whistler in August for a family gathering for a week and I figured it would be nice spend some time reel fishing. Wondering if there are recommendations for legal lakes near Whistler I can either fish with bait or a simple lure/spinner setup. Really don't know much about fishing, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Was going to rent a rod when I get there - if I need waders, I can grab those too. Thanks!

Based on the nature of your questions, the first thing I would recommend is that you read the Lower Mainland Fishing Regulations. They can be found here:

This will tell you where you can and cannot fish, with what and how many fish you can keep etc. For example; in Green and Alta Lakes in Whistler there is a bait ban.
there are lots and lots of lakes, the main issue is access. You can rent canoes for some of the lakes which is a good way to fish. Generally you are good with spinners and spoons in most lakes in that area. The most popular is the Gibbs, 3/6 Croc in hammered brass with an orange stripe, as shown above.

You are arriving at the right time to fish for Pink Salmon in the Squamish area, particularly around the confluence with the Mamquam. A pink spinner or spoon on a 7-9 foot light medium to medium power, medium to fast action spinning rod, with 10-12 lbs mono would be perfect.
If you fish for pinks in the Squamish and/or Mamquam there is no need for waders, wet wade with an old pair of hiking boots. The weather and water will be warm enough for a few hours.
Again, please check the regulations, the Conservation officers are frequently encountered in this area. Also please practice good catch and release techniques and not what you will see on the river if you fish for pinks. Keepemwet! Thanks.

Please note, as of August 1, fishing for pinks is NOT allowed in the Mamquam, Cheackamus or above the Cheackamus/Squamish Power lines until further notice. You can only fish for pinks in Tidal waters and in the main stem Squamish below the power lines.
