guess im not the lucky guy to get the first steel at my local river..1 was caught yesterday !!
MoeJKU

You hitting them on the fly again this year?
Single or double

I'm looking at a 7/8wt spey for them this year.
steelheadmike72

I'll be chasing them with gear for awhile until they really show up in good numbers then i'll switch over to the switch rod and swing some flies at em..
happy hunting.

10lbs is abit much I'd say...I bring a ziplock or small container full...unless of course your fishing sturgeon...I assumed steelhead was the target.

went to the local river..swinging flies all the way down to the ocean..no hookups today..tomorrow I'll drift wool.

funfisher 2, make sure you carry the receipt with you if carrying more than a kg of roe with you.
to go through 10 pounds in a day I'd have to be throwing it in without the hook! how could you use that much?
Zap brannigan

i bring a skein or 2 at the very most only need a small peice in the baitloop, and with steelhead roe shouldnt be the only thing your tossing out there for them i run 3 baits usually through each run sometimes more.
sharphooks moderator

same here.
Zap brannigan

i havnt even used 10 lbs in the last month or 2 never mind one day, you'll be stocked up on roe for a bit.
MoeJKU

haha 10lbs, i would say 1/2 lb max. If i am using roe i pre tie around 30 little sacs.
steelheadmike72

today the river opened for bait..worked it over pretty good from top to the ocean with roe.(12pieces)...no luck..hiked up and did it again with pink worms and wool...no luck...but at a favorite run of mine about 1km from the ocean i ran into a damn seal in the river...this was during high tide so he must have been chasing the steel entering the system...A good sign!!

gonna hit it again for 6hrs tomorrow before my afternoon shift..long day..hope i get 1 or3...lol

Steelhead candy.
steelheadmike72

I just use the left over fly line backing..but i give it a good coating of head cement to stiffen it up abit
cagey

i tie bucktails with trailer hooks which look the same as mike's.I just attach my trailer hook by mono. I tie on the trailer hook then wrap the leader around the shank of the front hook shank then wrap it with thread with the line/thread overlapping. I hope you follow . the hook shank and trailer hook are inseparable. the leader would have to break in between.

Hey Zap, is that candy you posted, deli shrimp with some colouring and does it also have scent?
Zap brannigan

small deli shrimp and also lager prawns/shrimp, sprinkle on some firecure in whatever colour you like then add rocksalt and dump any liquid out after a few hours and add scent if you like [i usually dont].

i use the small ones for tipping jigs and in garbage bags, and large ones rigged up on a hook.
Knnn

Nice, thank you.
cagey

hey, Mike, how has the fishing been. make sure you leave some for the end of February in case I can get over there !
steelheadmike72

I sure am putting the hours in!!! switched to a evening shift so i can hit tbe river more..putting in 40hr/week chucking roe -wool-jigs n worms...to no avail..I lost 1 a few weeks back...river is slow and alot of seals swimming up this season..the steel must be late..i know of about 12 that have been caught..this time last year there were atleast a couple a day...friggin slow!!
even the hatchery has only collected 1 for brood stock

but the rains are coming !! and im still plugging away at it..running low on roe tho..lol

thats my report

keep trying !
Zap brannigan

It's slow everywhere it seems, I've hooked and lost a few but usually by now I would have a few fish to hand.
