As our saltwater angling season swings into full gear, most who have ventured out to the south end of Denman and Hornby Islands have already had a taste of what should be another great year out on the water. The outside of Flora Isle has proven to be the best local hotspot again this year. The reefs in and around Flora are home to large schools of herring during the fishing season here in Area 14. This one particular body of water has been the best local producer of nice sized Chinooks for many years now. It is a challenging area to fish with both deep and shallow opportunities. Many of the sharp drop-offs tend to attract the bait and the salmon, so be sure to keep an eye on your finder at all times to make quick adjustments to your downriggers. The same applies when approaching a reef, try to keep one downrigger, as close to the bottom as possible, this can be tricky and requires a good knowledge of the area. Tribune Bay has produced some nice early season action as well with most strikes occurring in the 180-200 ft range. Try bouncing a 10 lb downrigger ball off the sandy bottom, just before and during the slack tide, this method has proven extremely effective in the entire Tribune Bay area. The set-ups we have been running with great success again this year are the 5 silver/prism and Cop Car Coyote Spoons trolled behind the very reflective Hot Spot Plaid Mylar flashers. As far as leader lengths go, we have typically been using a 5-6 ft with very good results. We have also been running the same Coyote spoons mentioned above directly on our main line without a flasher and have had great results. This method allows for increased trolling speeds with less resistance on your downrigger lines. The large silver Wonder Spoons are also well suited for this style of trolling and seem to entice some of the larger Chinooks to strike. Dan Boudreau (Gone Fishin Store, Courtenay) and myself are Co-chairing the First Annual Pacific Salmon Foundation Comox Valley Gala Dinner/Dance and Auction on September 10 th 2005. These P.S.F. fundraising events directly benefit local salmon restoration and enhancements societies all over B.C. The funds raised at these charity events help to ensure the survival of our wild Pacific Salmon stocks. For tickets or information on this event please call Dan Boudreau at (250) 334-2007 or Gil DiCesare at (250) 334-8442 or e-mail psfcomoxvalley@shaw.ca
