Can anyone tell me when steelhead season is? Are they only in the vedder? , do you flyfish for them? what works best. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I heard December but not to sure!!!!
Fishin is bad medicine

the steelhead season for vedder doesn't really start until late december, but there's been a few caught already in the lower river. The season is best during march, i believe. There's quite a few rivers other than Vedder that get a run of steelhead.
good luck

i always wait till after the first snowfall usually late december and onward before i really start targeting steelhead....damn cold too! i always keep one hatchery fish and let the rest go.......don't really admire their taste. vedder and chehalis are good rivers in late february march.

Thanks guys!!! Are these fish good to catch on a fly, or are they more of a river set up? And yes late december does sound cold, but always worth it when you catch one. This site is the best and has given me countless amounts of help!..... Also if they are fly fishingable whats best? Woolybuggers????

steelhead are caught both on fly and "river setups". check out the internet. there are lots of articles on steelhead.
fred's sports web site has some articles and there are lots of others. i would suggest ufishbc but it seems to be down lately. do a search under steelhead. you'll find lots of info.good luck

most of my success on vedder fishing for steelhead was using a floating technique, with very light gear, such as 8-10lb main line and 4-6lb leader. and drift a tiny bag of roe under a float. it is important to drift the offering as naturally as possible without drag.

as for the meat - i actually do like the taste of steelhead - it reminds trout rather then salmon and it is more tender. though it is always difficult to argue on taste preferences

el-nino and others, make sure you read the regs... in particular: "When you have caught and retained your daily quota of hatchery steelhead from any water, you must stop fishing that water for the remainder of that day."

So if you are going to keep one, you have to do all your C&R FIRST.

your right reach.that is very true. once you bonk your limit of steelhead you must stop fishing for that day.....even if your after other species. thanks for mentioning that!

Hey, I've always wanted to fish for stealhead, but never have. Is there a secret to it? I hear of some guys slaying them, and then ive heard that some people never catch them. I would be fly fishing and floatfishing. I have a float set up (for the salmon) and a fly setup. My fly set up is an 8wt. Is that heavy enough? I also want to know how to fish for them. Like, besides the swing techniques, is there anything you need to look for that says that the steelies are in the run? I know that good steal water is water that you can throw a stick into and walk alongside the stick in the current at a normal walking pace. LIke that the flow should be walking speed. Other that that, i have not the slightest clue about stealies. I know how to fly fish for salmon, but i dont know how closeley related those are. Anyways, any help would be great.
