Author Topic: Heading to Whistler this wknd, suggestions?

Hey everyone. The family and I are heading to Whistler for the long weekend. My son and I might have a 1/2 day to burn while the wife hangs out at the spa. Is there any good fishing right now, or is it just too warm? I know there's lots of opportunity for trout; however, I'm assuming not during end of July to beginning of August.
Is there any bass fishing in the area?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've never fished up that way but most high altitude lakes should be fine? in the hot weather fish early or late in the day especially for dry flies. fish deeper/slower.

I used to fish Alta lake in early July quite often. Just trolling flies worked well. Never tried it in August/late July but it is higher elevation so you might be ok.

Hello! Do you have a boat? That will help you cover more water.

I was up there 2 weeks ago and fished, Alta, Nita, Green, Mosquito and had the most success on Green at the mouth of Fitzsimmons Creek. It was the coldest of all the lakes up there and had the best fishing.

You can walk to it from Nicklaus North Golf Club. Beware, there is no public parking in that area, in their lot or on the streets. You can apply some green grease to the valet guys and maybe you will get lucky for a spot for a few hours.

If not, you can park on Golden Bear beside the River of Golden Dreams and walk 10 min the Clubhouse along the Valley Trail, then 5 to the mouth.

If on the fly, try green leeches/wolly buggers or fry patterns and get them deep- about 10-30 feet in that area along the drop off. There are plenty of bull trout and dollies hanging out in that area.

You won't have to worry about swimmers there.

Lost Lake has plenty of fish, but I'm sure it is really warm now and the fish are deep and off the bite. Plenty of lake users, swimming, boating....

Nita has lots of little guys that take almost all that is offered, but since the lake has a basalt basin, there isn't plenty of plant life in it, providing lots of food to grow big. You can try around the creek mouth. Don't waste your time off the dock near Nita Lake Lodge, too shallow. This lake is colder than Alta. With a boat, you can cover more area on it. Adams Irresistible, Tom Thumb, mosquito- surface.

Alta Lake's Rainbow Park offers good fishing, depending on the time of day. If you don't have a boat, try off the swimming platform. Try Black Tom Thumbs subsurface,

I'm not a gear chucker, so all I can offer is info on flies. Hope this helps!!

FWIW.... Whistler isn't really "high elevation" as the valley is 675m ASL whereas Grouse Mtn is 1231m ASL.

Nita lake temp 2 weeks ago was 61'-64'f
Alta Lake was 72'-75'f
Green Lake was 55-58'f

All at surface.

Thanks for the suggestions. I won't have the boat, truck getting 10 mpg and A/C doesn't work is a bad combo.

Thanks again.
