anyone out today? any fish? Lumby or Enderby end?
I am tied up babysitting 8 beautiful pups so cannot get out! anyone want a beautiful pup. mom is a pure bread choc lab while dad is a pure bread German shepherd imported from Germany ! all 8 of them are jet black, like dad, but look like labs . both parents are very nice dogs ! they will keep me from fishing for 2 more weeks then the moose will call so I won't likely get out until September when the Thompson gets going !
mzmann

Hit a couple spots from the ball diamonds to cooke creek today and not a sight nor splash of any springs yet...talked to a guy doing a krill survey for fisheries and one of their guys who tried a snorkle count yesterday seen zero as well....heard of a few being caught at mable but few and far between yet its looking.
cagey

mike, try the lumby end if you get a chance.
the early run is probably already in mable. they just bomb straight up so you do not see much if any in the lower river until a bit later
mzmann

yeah, I was thinking the same....may give lumby side a shot this weekend.
corey1

Hey there it,s pete never got out with sis here ill call u this week
cagey

hi pete. from what mzmann said the Enderby end is a waste of time for reasons I explained to you last week and above.
lumby can be really good if the water levels are right, especially if you can get permission to access some of the holes down stream a bit from the dam or if you have a boat and know how to operate it in swift water with lots of rocks and logs to avoid. it is not easy. a lot of guys have found out the hard way ! my favourite place is called the "meat hole" . the one year I was able to access it I got my limit of 4 fish in july and august and released several, most guys with boats just go down below the hatchery and fish a big pool. quite a gong show !
otherwise, there are several nice pools below the dam which can be good but they are busier/crowded if there are fish .
anyway, give me a call and I will see if I can get away. remind me to get you a bag of roe. the spot near Enderby you mentioned will start to pick up in another week to 10 days.
cagey

anyone been out?
mzmann

Went and tried out lumby end - Fished a run just off the road on way to mable for about an hour with not a sniff nor sight of any rollers or anything....watched the river there for awhile as I could see clear across with a couple deep channels, seen squat for fish/movement other than a bunch of small trout/juvies jumpin - moved to between the falls and the hatchery for a few more hrs with one take/miss and 2 rollers seen up there....should mention as well that I was using everything but roe, lol.
cagey

many fishing?
mzmann

nope, was actually quite surprised for being a long weekend sunday....I didn't see a single soul other than 2 guys coming in when I was leaving. Than was between the falls and hatchery........a couple people closer to the hatchery but it appeared that they were just enjoying the weather and water and not fishing.
cagey

sounds dead! a buddy called me last night. mable lk has been dead too. maybe they are late or not coming!
mzmann

or one too many nets strung across the river somewhere.....chatted with another guy who lives on the river and he said countless times there have been natives stringing nets across at sundown and bringing em in at sunrise so as not to get caught...also said it has been getting much worse for this in the last few yrs.......considering many of these fish probably hold safe in the lakes until the late/early hrs and bomb up the rivers under darkness or low light conditions, im sure this has a lot to do with it. Heard there are usually a couple nets strung closer to the mara end as well......makes for pretty tough fishing.
cagey

they usually fish with nets later. they have a few days they are allowed to. I've never seen or heard of nets at the Lumby end though.
mzmann

Never heard of em at the lumby end either....the nets he was talking of were somewhere in the enderby-kingfisher and enderby-mara but really makes one wonder..I mean I know they are allowed a couple days? or maybe up to as much as a week or so?......I'm not really sure how long they get an opening for but if what I heard above for a lifelong river resident it indeed true it sure wouldn't surprise me as to why such slow fishing.....hopefully it is indeed just that they are late!....only 10days away for the south t anyways I guess!
cagey

I've never caught one on the south t. until sept. 1st.
there have been several years when they did not show up at lumby until the last day.
the fishing at the Enderby end will start to pick up about aug 15th . usually there is minimal pressure until around the end of the month when the word gets around. then the gong show starts and I don't bother and switch to the south t.
I might get out sunday for a try and will let you know how I do.
mzmann

sounds good, who knows I may even pop out myself....you going to lumby end or enderby/diamonds?
cagey

probably the Enderby end. it is a long way for me to get to lumby when there are no fish. i'll bring you a bag of roe if you are coming out. (as long as I remember it!)
mzmann

Sweet, that would be great!....what time you aiming for?
cagey

if I go I will be there at 4 am
cagey

I just checked the sunrise. it is not legal until 4:45 am so that is when I will try to be there. hope to see you.
mzmann

Perfect...an extra 45min of sleep, lol. I should be there.
cagey

I will be at the slide hole at the kingfisher ballpark. I am convinced I must give it a try. got rid of all but one pup today so I am free! the one left will be a great fishing partner!
mzmann

Cool, get him taught young for sure!....I should be there for sure as well...may even head to cooke creek early tomorrow eve and throw the tent up for the night to get another extra hr and a bit of sleep and maybe even a little evening fish sat night...if they are full up for the weekend then I may just curl up in the car for the night even, lol....either way, im in!....catch ya Sunday morn.
cagey

sounds great!
mikellini

Did you have any luck? I'm heading out to Grindrod this morning, try fishing beside the bridge on the east side... Anyone catch anything there? I'll let you know how it goes
cagey

it was totally dead up kingfisher way on sunday. I caught one pike minnow and mzmann tried to clean out the hole. he caught a hole bunch of the slimy things! the fish are still bombing right through. they will start holding in the pools soon though.
let us know how you did at grinrod.
mikellini

Lost a weight, saw a few pike minnows... Nothing else. Do you guys run roe with a spin n glo? Or or just the spinner?
cagey

I usually float fish with roe but in the right situation I bottom fish with a spin and glo such as when fishing the south Thompson. in the first hour after sunrise I often use a fst painted with glo paint.
get some roe and try again in about a week. the fish should be starting to move in to the pools soon and holding. down by grinrod more fish will be moving through by then.
mikellini

I've got roe, made up roe bags and I've been running it along with a spin n glo on the bottom. This is my first time fishing for salmon in a river, never float fished in a river. Maybe you can let me know the next time you're heading out, I'd appreciate the chance to learn a thing or two. Thanks!
cagey

no problem but I will be away until September then will be fishing the Thompson as it is closer to my place. I fish at banana island which is a few miles down stream from chase. remind me in September and i'd be glad to have some company . as far as what you are doing, it just needs the fish and you have a chance.
find abe's old posts on setups for salmon fishing. I have to head off but if I find it quickly I will bump it up. I think he did one for float fishing. just use a sliding float with a stopper about 12 feet up for most of the pools on the Shuswap. good luck!
mikellini

I made it out to the lumby end last night... Wasn't sure where to go, I kinda bushwhacked from the road down to the river. By the time I got my gear all sorted it was nearly dark, but a nice time anyway. No fish
mzmann

Mikellini.....I may head out and try the kingfisher/ball diamonds area next weekend on 24th or 25th (will be out of town until then....leave your email and if I do indeed head out I can give you a shout if you're interested.

As for the lumby end just follow the signs to the hatchery and once you are on the little gravel hatchery road (north before the bridge on way to mable) then park where the road splits (should be a cement block on the river side of the road) and just walk right down there. Good slow deep pools along there and probably the easiest area to access on that end without a jetboat.

On a semi separate note, heard from a friend that the boys in the jets at Vics hole, knockout hole and nancy's corner have been getting into some as of last weekend. (no real idea as to exactly where those holes are other than lumby end below the hatchery I believe).
mikellini

Definitely interested for either the 24th or 25th... let me know if you're going!

That's good to know for the Lumby end, although it'll be next year as it's closed now for this season. Thanks
mzmann

no worries and yes indeed closed now up there......got your email saved (as you may want to remove it) and will let you know when/if i'm headin out.....if not then for some reason, then I may hit it or the South T/Banana Island the following week or weekend....hopefully will be able to do both but too far ahead to say for sure yet.
cagey

mzmann, if you have lots of nerve and no brains you can go down with a 12 ft. aluminum and a kicker. if you really know how to maneuver a kicker it is easy. I went with a buddy a couple of times with him "driving". he was a magician ! went with another buddy a few days after and we barely escaped with the boat in one piece and our lives. no idea where those holes are either ! the only holes I know are the deer hole just down from the hatchery a ways and then further down was the meat hole. there are a few small holes in between. of course the river changes every year. jet boats are definitely the way to go. I have been down in a canoe as well which went well as my partner knew what he was doing and I know enough so we were fine. the other canoe with us had some scary minutes !
the hole you were describing, at the fork in the road, is what I call the canyon pool. there are some nice holes above that. I used to always fish off the big rock at the next hole up. some fish the top pool. I forget it's name. if someone hooks one someone has to crawl down a rope to net it ! I was never good at rope climbing. you should check them all out for next year ! the fish are always nice and fresh in July and early august at Lumby. wish I lived closer. 2 1/2 hours is too far when I can wait for the Thompson, 20 minutes away.
anyway, have fun at the ballpark you guys. I'm going to the t. tomorrow for a few hours but am not expecting much luck. then I am gone Monday morning so will see you when I get back. maybe a sharphooks day on the Thompson in September ?
mzmann

yeah, doubt i will make it back out lumby way at all again this year with it being closed for salmon up there now...and dont think you would catch me in there with a tinny and kicker, lol....for the amount i make it up there i'll just stick to shore, lol.....kingfisher/lumby and the south t are all right aroung 1.5-2hrs for me as well being out where I am so a bit far just for a scouting.......anyways, let us know how you do tomorrow and i'm sure I will be out a few times on the south t in sept as well...just have to play that by ear for what days I may be able to get away.
cagey

mikellini or mzmann, did either of you make it out this weekend? any luck?
mikellini

I was at Grindrod again this morning. A guy in a boat caught two jacks, 8 & 10lb, drifting roe under a float. I got nothing. Went up on the bridge and looked for about 20 minutes... nothing. Need to get the first one already!
mzmann

still away at the moment but hoping to maybe get out on Sunday if I can....Mikellini, I will shoot you an email on Saturday if indeed I am able to head out. Still haven't decided if I want to try kingfisher area again or head over to the thompson....guess I should wait and see if I am able to head out first and then decide from there, lol.
mikellini

Sounds good to me, I might go tomorrow as well. I'll let you know if I have any luck
mikellini

Still no luck, and now I'm out of roe haha
mzmann

Email sent, could be in junk/spam folder as well.
mzmann

Finally got the ice broken for the season today! Hit a nice hatchery buck this morning around 12-13lb, with a couple missed and a couple other bucks (1 hatch 1 wild) brought in by a couple others fishing the area as well. bite was off by 8 or so. I stayed until 2pm with no other fish brought in by around 6-10 people that came through. Ours today were the first marked by the survey guy who has been there pretty much daily for 8hrs/day since opening day.....even scored a free hat out of the deal in trade for some scales and the head of the hatchery fish. You turn the heads in and they also will send you details recovered from the chip implant as to age and when/where it was released, etc. Anyways, All in all a great day but still somewhat slow yet.
mzmann

Almost forgot to add the best part...how the fish ended up being landed, lol.......fought it for approx 5-10min with fairly light 12lb flouro leader...which I lazily had on still from a previous trip which I knew was a bit rough...fish dives deep as usual and tries its best to break me off on/in the jagged rocks, other fellow fishing tries a couple unsuccessful tailings for me but the fish kept taking back off and diving into the rocks...along comes mikellini who smartly and evidently has brought the only net which he kindly offered up right about the perfect time as this fish just did not want tailed...so now we take 1 unsuccessful stab with the net when "SNAP" my heart breaks as the line goes limp and I see the fish slowly swimming off with my hook still firmly embedded in his mouth with a 2-3inch trail of remaining leader, lol...BUT..where does he immediately go to rest but into a V in the rocks where he tried to bury his head again to no avail and where he just sat patiently waiting for me to maneuver back to him and gently scoop him back up to retrieve my hook and give him a well deserved and well earned BONK! lol
jg

Congrats! Were you at the ball park? Corner or slide? I was at the corner pretty much all day yesterday only to get skunked. I will try my luck again on wednesday.
mzmann

Yes at the ballpark, fish were caught at both corner and slide but all were also only within a 45 min window right at sunrise.
mikellini

haha yeah it was pretty good. I don't feel so bad for not getting one today, at least I didn't stick around losing roe until 2! haha I think Tuesday morning might work, try again there...
mikellini

Gonna try by the bridge in Grindrod this eve... gotta get something before the month changes!
mzmann

Good luck and get into a damn fish already, lol!....hopefully will be headed out Sunday to either the ballpark again or south t. Then tues night heading for a 3-4day campin/fishing trip to the harrison/vedder and possibly even a couple other smaller systems depending how the fishing is at the others of course, lol
cagey

just crawled in this morning from my moose hunt. put it this way, my freezer is empty still. only the second time I have come home empty handed in over 40 years.
oh well, will have to find one around home! in the meantime it is time to catch some salmon. I will likely try the south Thompson unless I get a good report on the Shuswap from a friend. glad to see you got your first of the season mike. maybe see you Sunday?
mzmann

Sorry to hear about the moose cagey....hopefully you will get into one before the end of season......should see ya Sun morning as my younger brother is down so I think the father, bro and I will head out there Sunday morning.....provided we don't get to drunk tonight that is, lol.
cagey

mikellini and jg how have you done so far? I understand there have been some good days at the slide hole . i'm going to stick to the south Thompson for a few days but may try the Shuswap one day this week or next. may see you on one of the rivers !
jg

Its getting better. Caught a nice doe about 10 at the slide on 30th.
Yesterday by 8ish, 7 got pulled out from the slide, but I got skunked.
I heard next week will get real good in enderby.
Hey cagey. I was fishing on the bank across from about middle of banana island on Saturday. I had a fish on for a bit and lost it. That was the only bite.
Is it the spot you usually go to?
cagey

that is it! basically the lower half of the island.
maybe see you there once they close down the Shuswap or you get over run by the hordes. it gets worse as the season winds down ! I've seen 15 rods at the slidehole lots of times , sometimes worse !
glad you have had some luck so far. sure is fun fighting them eh?
jg

I love it!! Cant wait to pull out over 20 pounder. My biggest catch was just over 15 but mostly 7, 8 pounders. I will try thompson again on saturday to sharpen up my bar fishing skill and hopefully hook up to nice size doe. Maybe see you there.
cagey

I am quite sure I will be there . look forward to meeting you.
