I had to replace my deep cycle battery after 3 years use and decided to go for an Optima. I decided to keep an eye on he state of charge to see how well it performed. Sadly, it did not perform as I expected. I was using a Minn Kota, 50lb on a 12ft fiberglass boat. My buddy has an old battery and aMinn Kota 30lb with digital maximiser. Seems to go on forever
I realised that I may have made a mistake in not buying a digital maximiser and bit the bullet and splashed out on a Minn Kota 55lb digital maximiser. On checking the useage after a days trolling I was totally impressed.
It is worth the extra cash. So if you are considering buying a new trolling motor get the one with the digital maximiser, it is well worth the extra.

I have found the same thing. my buddy has a maximize, I don't. I go home to re-charge long before he does.
ps how is the zodiac working out?

I have to say, I love it. It suits my needs well and I was going to raise seperate topic. Not tried it with the MK55lb but I am sure it will fly.

I also have Digital maximiser 45lb thrust. Works great pushing around 150lb car topper. Worth the extra $ over other electric troll motors.
