We went out on Okanagan this evening to try dragging a few lures for the first time this year. This was only our second time taking our canoe on this lake, and the last time, the summer before we did not yet own our motor. It was glassy smooth when we left and we launched just a few km north of Ellison Park. We then trolled down past Ellison to a little past the Outback. Then we turned around and were starting to troll back when the weather really came up. We stowed the gear and kicked the motor into full (2hp on a 1/2 loaded canoe). We were not outrunning the weather but we were outrunning the waves just slightly so we ran back with a tailwind without too much drama. By the time we got back to where we launched (around 3-4 bays) the weather had disappeared. So we left our rods stowed but tackle on and ready to go and decided to head north into the east bay (where Kin Beach and the Yacht club are) and do some sightseeing. That was nice and the sailboats were out and hoping for another gust, so just before Kin beach we turned around. I refueled as we probably motored for an hour at full by then. We headed back pronto to where we launched and about 1/2 way there the sky started looking ugly again. Then slow rolling waves started, which were no issue, then as we were almost back we started seeing whitecaps again. We got in close to the beach and kept on, hugging the shore. We almost made it back when the winds kicked up to 60km+ and the waves were just too much. I ditched and shot for the beach as the waves started to get 2+ feet high, we bailed in the shallows and pulled the canoe onto shore at some multimillion dollar home. Then we started to unload the canoe so we could get it up on the beach. By now it is raining and the wing takes it up another notch. The waves are totally surf-worthy now and are pretty much trying to toss the canoe further up the beach, so we finally get it up on the beach. We get collected and get our raingear on and ascertain that nobody is home where we shipwrecked. The property is near vertical but we hike up to the road leaving everything behind to get the car. The climb was treacherous and we finally get to the road. I start around the bend and see the boat launch sign. Turns out we were about 3 or 4 properties shy of the launch (just around the point). I had envisioned anything from that distance to a few more km. So we get the car, get back to the mansion and ring the doorbell. Nothing, so we start scoping out the best way to get back down and get our gear back. Turns out the gate on the opposite side of the property from where we landed had an unlocked deadbolt. so as light is fading we quickly do the near vertical stair master through glassed in brick staircases down to the boat. We tag-team all the gear, motor, fuel and other boat items back to the car. Yay, mostly there! We go back down for the last load and as my g/f takes our boat-tote/customized milk crate/rod holders out, I decide to at least move the canoe, then I can leave a note and hopefully return for the boat when the gale dies. It has a yoke and I get it up on my now weary shoulders and decide to go back up the first side of the propery/mountainside while my g/f takes the architectural stairmaster from hell. I start climbing, the switchbacks that lead half way up, where the hot-tub pad is. Then I have to climb the rock wall and bushwack the other 1/2 of the way on loose, now wet soil. I knew if I slipped, I could catch myself, but the canoe would be on the rocks below in pieces. Amazingly through sheer stubborness I made it up to the road level. My g/f comes around the corner, jaw on the ground, thinking I was just moving the canoe somewhere more secure. So I get it up on the car, we catch our breath, shiver a little, laugh some and start strapping it all down. By then it was about 9:30 and dark and it was WAY past time for dinner. So in conclusion, Okanagan Lake can kiss my ass. I will not be back anytime soon in a boat this small unless I plan on swamping intentionally, in the heat of summer. Glad I spent a lot of time around water and boats growing up or tonight could have been really ugly.
