Comments
Was having a great time on this lake trolling yellow rooster tails 50-70 ft.-2 small slip shot keeping lures within 8ft. of the surface. My wife hooked into a big fish, judging from the huge bow in her rod, and amount of line it was peeling off heading down deep I would say it was probably a 4-5 lb. fish. In the excitement of her catching her first fish ever she moved very quickly sideways to get more leverage on this scrappy fish and tipped our rental canoe. Everything was downhill from there, we both were dressed with jeans, runners, sweatshirt which resulted in us gaining many more lbs.which caused us to sink,we are both good swimmers yet treading water was next to impossible,we tried grabbing the sides of the canoe but it just kept on spinning over, the water was so cold within minutes my hands started to go numb.WE both got to each end and I was able to pull my chest up on the keel, but my wife was too weak to pull herself up.We were about 300yds off the northeast shore which is very limited to land upon. In total we spent 20-25 minutes in the water fighting for our lifes,it was very scary. Now I know what your thinking-where were their life-jackets? That's why I am writing this.We both made a common mistake most of us make from time to time.We felt very comfortable seeing that we were on a relatively small local lake,no wind, sunny, good swimmers(people were swimming at the boat launch beach)I've used canoes to lake fish for close to 50yrs.In a nutshell we let our gaurd down and it nearly cost us our lives. Until you have acually gone into a very cold lake fully clothed you don't really know how well you can swim in those conditions. That's why I wrote this telling about my stupid mistake, fishing season is upon us we may head to our favorite fishing spot.DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCES BY PRESUMING EVERYTHING WILL GO AS PLANNED LIKE IT HAS THE LAST FIFTY YRS.Oh and by the way my fellow fisherman, there is still a nice lunker in Buntzen Lk. with a yellow fly Rooster Tail in his mouth waiting for a little oral surgery
