Author Topic: cap. or vedder mouth???

Heading out this weekend and wondering what is a better choice.... either the mouth of the vedder for springs, or the capilano for early coho????? Stuck on what to use though since i've never fished in these spots... ill probably use spinners at the cap. and vedder unless there is a better technique... any comments would be appreaciated

I would suddgest vedder mouth for springs. troll tea spoon if you have a boat. I dont know much a bout trolling in the river but guidebc.com under articles read the spring article by vic if you do decide to go to the mouth of the cap be there at first light with bait. one option you could do would be to troll ant cap first 2 hours of light and then head to the vedder mouth for springs. if you dont have a boat dont bother with the mouth of the cap.let us know how you do.

ya ill be fishing from shore.. thanks for the advice tho SA.. ill keep you all informed on how i do

not much going on in the cap right now, I fish it quite frequently and have not seen much actitivity yet. bonked one yesterday but thats about it in the last 3 days.

I would have to agree with SA...stick to the vedder. I have never walked in either so if you make it back in there let us know how the hike is; that area is a mud pit come coho season and can be a miserable hike!

The coho season does not start till July 1st
check the regs

you read the regs wrong, the cap is open now to coho. Maybe you meant something different?

Pug Bumper is right...the cap, is open. Only restrictions on that river are: Closed to all Steelhead, Bait Ban Aug 1 - Oct 31, and no fishing above the foot bridge near the hatchery.

Read the regs yourself at:
http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/synopsis.html

Maybe you were thinking of tidal...not too sure.

i never knew you had to hike to the vedder mouth... i thought there was a road nearby.. so i guess i'll be going to the capilano.. or does anybody no if the mamquam's doing okay for early coho or springs??
---gooey, where abouts did you go on the cap?? did u go up to cable pool?? if so how do u get there??
gooey

I have never been down to the mouth of the vedder but I have been to the train bridge down there (which I think is pretty close to the mouth)...I am not sure if there is road access, we always hiked in and fish various pools along the way. Maybe someone knows a better route?

In terms of the cap, at this time of the year, any pool will do (and yes I am avoiding your question as to specifically where I was)!

Here's a little pic from the cap last year to wet your appetite (from mid summer last year). Not huge fish but an absolute blast on a 7w fly rod and centerpin!

Those fish were extremely aggressive. They were coming in on the high tide and were picking up roe with no hesitation. Just about everyone who understood the drift hooked their limit +++. Unfortunately the run filled in over the winter so we have yet to see if they'll still be stacked in there this year.

Sorry, not much help on the fly side, i am just getting into it. I did pick up a nice home made pattern from a guy who almost always outfishes the bait guys. he uses 6 patterns. his favorite 2 are a small olive/green wooly bugger and a pattern he developed (silver wire wrap over tightly wrapped green body, with a yellow hackle and tail).

If you are fishing the mouth of the Cap that is tidal
and that is July 1st
gooey

Concerning the regs for the mouth of the cap it does seem that July 1st is when the season opens:

Unfortunately for the fish in the pic above, I was well above the CN Train Bridge so indeed thats non tidal .

Hey Gooey, if I remember that day well, two of those fish are mine. We put them together for the picture...stop hogging the glory!
gooey

Ya I couldnt remember if it was you or my dad...now that I think about it, its my bonker and your leathermam in the pic!!!

Everyone knows the limit is 2 per person anyhow (right gang) so hopefully no one else thought I was claiming responsibilty for all 4 fish.

On a side note... aren't my 2 fish the bigger 2 anyhow!!!

bug pumper

ya, only your fish is bigger pal...heh,heh.
