im a twelve year old boy and i LOVE fishing it is what i was put on this earth to do! But whenever i fish and whereever i fish i never seem to be able to catch anything why not? is it the bait? is it where im fishing everyone around me catches stuff but not me even if i use the same setup! for example i was at buntzen lake 5 days ago and this guy there caught 5 rainbows i caught squat why is this? somebody PLEASE tell me what is wrong what baits to use and some tricks of the trade BECAUSE I WANNA CATCH SOME FISH!
Alex

buntzen, first of all - never give up and it WILL come. There are a lot of small tricks (there is no magic one that will do the job).

As relates to your particular case - squawfish is always cruising shallows, where water is warm. You will never find trout in the warm water.

The best place to fish for trout are drop offs. Trout will stay in colder water with more oxygen and wait for something to swim by.

So, my guess is that your neighbor was casting further (maybe not that much further) or/and was fishing deeper then you. Trout is very picky. You need to present your bait exactly where they are and the choice of bait plays a crucial role as well.

Also pay attention to your tackle. It is important that you use a very fine leader near your hook (1/2 foot leader, 4lb test).

And finally, fish recognize smell 20 times better then dogs. Don't ever eat oranges or similar things when fishing

buntzen, similar story happened to me when I first started to fish for salmon here on Fraser. I will go all the way to Hope (330km round trip) and will be fishing shoulder-to-shoulder with other 50+ people. I was using the same very setup, was casting exactly in the same spot and doing all other things copying them.

They will get the fish and I am not!

I went there 8 (!!!) times and didn't land a single fish, while guys next to me will hook them every other 10-15 minutes or so. And on every trip I spent 5-7 hours without a bite!

I was mad to the point of quitting fishing forever!

But eventually I figured it out. Myself. And that defined my commitment to fishing for all of my life.

So, your problem might be there for reason

And welcome to the world of fishing!

ya i go down to hope every year when sockeye opens with my dad at first i had no clue what to do but after a while i got the hang of it and was fishing like a pro in no time. It just take practice.

buntzen

i got 6 lbline on do you think that that is to thick? and do you know if power bait is good?
buntzen

* 6 lb line
Alex

Anonymous, at least you had your dad to give you a hint or two
I was later giving hints to others

Tight lines and sharp hooks!
Alex

buntzen, so, you were using power bait.
Were you fishing under a float or you were using a bottom rig?
buntzen

bottom rig
buntzen

i was float fishing
buntzen

is six pound line to heavy? for rainbows which will be between 9 and 12 inches
Alex

You are not supposed to use power bait under a float because power bait is floating itself. So, the bait will be positioned in a way that will scare fish away - too many lines. Dew worms under a float is the best bet for that type of fishing. You may need to have a sliding float to get to deeper areas.

As for bottom fishing with a rig - always use sliding weight, so that you will feel the take (fish does not need to move your weight first). Second, always allow 2-3 feet leader, so that the bait will float on top of any weeds that grow on the bottom. And one more thing - when fishing with power bait you should be ready to set the hook quickly. It helps to hold the line slightly with your hand - this way you will feel the take much sooner, then just watching the tip of the rod.

Good luck!

This is my Prize Catch from August 2002. 51.25-lb Spring

Buntzen, fishing is all about patience, and this game teaches you alot about just waiting.
I have done salt & fresh water all my life I have lived on the coast. As other have said you can stand right next to a guy who is dropping them every couple of mins, and your gettin nothing. I was sitting at the mouth of the Cap River this past spring in a float tub hangin off a hook, and the guys from shore were droppin fish all over the place, I drove home, cold, wet & tired, the best I caught was a couple of bullheads and a lot of seaweed. Not one salmon. I got burned 3 weekends in a row.
Dunno what I was doing wrong, but I sure wasn't doing anything right. When your out, and something is working, ask, your neighbours. Ask what bait are you using, how deep, Etc. Etc. Most people will be more than happy to give you pointers right then and there.

Just dont quit, this aint like a video game

buntzen

lol thats ironic u say its not like a video game hahah i just rented a game and i cant catch fish in the game either its like fish are scared of me hehe
