smelly roe

Caught a small steelhead today, the weather is perfect and know ones around. This one was above the ranger run.

after years of tailing fish, I decided to get this catch and release net. I'm pretty happy with it. I find that if you don't have a buddy around to tail the fish it can be tough to do it on your own. Especially on the rocks. Steelhead sized as well.

nice fish! How long do steelhead stay in the river?Till may or june?
abito

was it a kelt?
gooey

no...it was full o' roe (so I was told)
Anonymous

gooi's right, it wasn't a kelt. Common eh, I wouldn't keep a kelt... sheesh. You likely asked that because it is long and thin, weird cuz it was full of roe.
Anonymous

Sturgeon, they'll be in there for a while yet. But drift fishing ends next week. In May its fly fishing only, in June its closed.

When the vedder/chilliwack river goes to fly only in may,Is it harder to catch fish with flys, Or is the fishing better due to there being less fish being pulled out on bait?
dwg

Typically, it is harder on a flyrod. But it all depends on how much flyfishing experience you have.

If you have flyfished rivers before AND have the right flyfishing gear (an assortment of flies, flylines with different sink rates) you could probably do ok.

It's definately easier drift fishing.

When I fish, i like to fish both ways.

Ya fly fishing is much harder.I like to use wool.I try a couple different colours.I really only fly fish lakes and small creeks.I will go to the vedder and try a fly or 2 this year.I went on sunday and got skunked.I used roe and shrimp. My buddies dad get's fish almost everytime.I made him finally give me his honey hole.He will meet me there on friday.Do most people just go to there spot and stay to fish the river for the morning or do they run all over driving madly up and down the river trying to find the fish? What fly's do i use to fish the vedder?
dwg

Black GP, Squamish poacher, popsicle variations, big black leeches are some flies to use. If the water is dirty, try popsicles. if the water is clear, I would use darker patterns.

Finally, don't stay at one spot too long. It's pretty well the same as creek fishing. You wouldn't stay at one spot on a creek all day would you? Unless the hole is filled with fish of course.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip's DWG. I can't wait to get back to the vedder. I really like allison pools but i've yet to catch a fish there. I 'm going to work that area for a bit.

sturgeon, if you go on fri, try the stretch behind the on the way store. You park on the right of the store and walk in on the trail there. When you get to the river go left upstream, you'll get to an area witha dyke and a big long deep run. Try useing a colorado blade under your float, the fish have seen everything else. you'll have luck there.

Thanks smelly roe. But are you talking about the store on yarrow road off the no#3 The old town store?I tried browne rd is it close to that?
gooey

No, he is referring to a run way up river from Yarrow. On the Way is the first store you come to on the right hand side driving up river from the Vedder Crossing (the bridge at the army base). The store is called "On the Way" hence the name of the run behind it. The trail to the river is WELL treavelled and very easy to pick out...as he said: park on the right of the store, follow the trail in to the river and walk upstream from there...maybe 10-15 minutes of easy walking for a really nice whole. Lots of little pockets and slots worth a couple of casts along the way to.

Good Luck

I know the store. Thanks for the spot.I sometimes eat at the cafe a little further up.Good grub after a early morning. I'm on the way AHAHAH
jerkky

Use black GP's size 2/0 up to 5/0 when the water colors up. IMO the best steelhead fly all around. Got 5 steelhead on that pattern alone this year.
