smelly roe

Wow! what a day, perfect conditions for steelheading. Between me and Rob we hooked 3 steelhead and 2 Dollies. Didn't get all on camera, but here are a few. Fished upper river with roe and ghost shrimp.

Finally, after two years of trying....

I caught a wild doe on the float rod with a white worm. I say to myself, ok, it wil never bet any better than this.

So I get my fly gear out and 20 minutes later, bang, a nice wild buck!!

Moral: Never give up!

great job you guys are so lucky I dont think ill have a shot at steeleis until next year. what fly did you use? what weight rod annd did i say good job?
smelly roe

wow! I just reread your post and noticed you got the second fish on a fly,- Even better!! I never see the fly guy's have any luck when I'm out. I flyfish for coho but never steelhead yet, -good job!!
dwg

Thanks Guys!

The fish was caught on a 50 dollar 7wt daiwa fly rod. I had 8 feet of leadcore imitation sink tip (from Michael & Young) and a 3 foot, 10 pound test leader.

The fly was a dark articulated leech pattern, which Kathy Ruddick, from Ruddick's fly shop suggested I use on overcast days.

Zig-Zag

Nice fish everyone!
Dwg. I am glade to here you say you got it on inexpensive gear very refreashing and so true.
When I was starting to flyfish( 25 yrs.ago ) I had a similer setup $30 Diawa and used actual leadcore that I looped to a cheap floating line, I made a few different lengths and coated the leadcore with liquid vynle to make it more durable.
I like the rig you used on you Pit report as well
leapingcoho

hi dwg, were both of those fish caught in the same area?
dwg

Yes, both fish were caught in the same run.
The run was fished by both my buddy and I for about 45 minutes with different flies/gear before it produced the two fish.
