Topic: sunfish in deer lake (burnaby) |

went for a walk around deer lake today. stopped by the lillys and peered into the gravel shallows and noticed an odd looking fish for that lake. it looked blueish with stripes, bout 8 inches long. bright fin edges and a distinct bright spot on/around its gill (same colour as fin edge). it was guarding a territory from other smaller same species fish.
i assume its a sunfish? just thought that's interesting because there have been recent posts about bass in deer lake. also, i never knew that they existed in that lake. wondered if they always existed there, or if the bass and these guys have been recently introduced?
would post pictures but the quality of my phone camera isn't great. cant make anything out of the images...

Sounds like a Redear Sunfish, but could be a Pumpkinseed Sunfish which seems to be more common in this part of the world. Sun fish aren't native to BC, so the fish was likely planted by the bucketbrigade just as the bass were.

not quite red but silvery white. but that doesn't really matter... point is (as you stated), deer lake is infested!
