Was wondering how to go about finding the bottom of the river or hole without lossing all your gear,I know that you want to have it runing along the bottom but i finding that i'm snagging up when i get there. thanks for any help you can provide

I have been told and have tried using a hollow weight on my line. That is to say one that is not fixed in one position and will slide up and down the line. If you use this method, be sure to use a bead between the lead and the swival. I used to use the fixed swival and pinched on lead and found it hung up a lot more. Using the lead right on the line or one of the pencil leads that have the eye on them both accomplish the same thing. The key is having the ability to slide up and down the mainline. Since I have switched to this method I have not lost nearly as much gear. Give it a try. You don't have anything to lose...Hope this helps.

After struggling with the same issue for a while, I began to use the following setup with good success.

Press a piece of coil lead on a separate leader attached to the 3-way swivel. It is not only very easy to break when stuck, but it also surprisingly escapes snags very well (don't know why). Try it - works really well.

And one final note - if you are fishing for steelhead, there is no need to keep your offering at the bottom. Steelhead (similar to Coho) will rise to bite. In fact, the sound of a bouncing weight may scare steelhead.
