Author Topic: Newbie Question! Line WT rating on rods

Hey all! Just joined and I have my first newbie question... Does the line rating on fishing rods translate directly to the weight of the fish the rod can handle? For example, if the rod is rated at 8-20lbs line does that mean that it should be able to handle a 20lbs fish? Thanks for you help!

No, The line rating on the rod means it will handle up to a 20lb Diameter of mono filament fishing line correctly.

Oh! That's good to know! So how can you tell if a rod can handle a 20lber?

Hmm gotta guess.. I think a 20 lb fish weighs almost nothing underwater but if its strong it could pull more than 20 lb force. For a 20 lb fish you probably want a medium heavy rod.

I was interested in your question and have tried to find an answer for you. Rod reel and line must be balanced in terms of weight capacity. But there are many factors related to the weight fish you can catch. It is mainly down to technique but other factors are involved.
