Author Topic: mighty unexpensive spinning reel

wondering for an unexpensive spinning reel, i have had the surprise to find out the shimano tx4000 (in sale with walmart $35), that supports 20lb max drag. i tried it with the spool filled and worked well at 15 lb; that means about 20 with the spool empty;

i'm stil a little puzzled;
there were different kinds of shimano reels, IX,FX,FR,AX,AR,TX,etc ; the model 4000 for any of them is capable of storing about 180 yards of 12 lb mono;
all of them were about the same thing (1-2 ball bearings and features) si i checked the specifications, and have found that the max drag is different, from 7 lb to 20 lb (tx 4000) the max drag is not written on package;
now, why would you make a reel capable of storing 12 lb mono and make it with a max drag of 7-10 lb?
why make the max drag 20 lb and recommend only 12 lb mono?(you can put braided line with no problems)
i use to think that the max drag matches the max line power you can put on the reel with the fishable length(of about 180 yards)

the only thing that comes to my mind is that some of the guys making the reels made different parts for different purposes; then some other guys simply mixed and matched the parts, for any different combination writing a different code on the box...
