Howdy all, London Drugs has a great deal on gps right now and I picked one up. Do any of you know where to go to get free maps of BC? If so, would you please post a link. Thank you

Wouldnt your gps come with BC maps?

You would think so, however it has the USA preloaded and Canada is just a big blank. It shows the border outline but no details.

Thats retarded. I have no idea where to find those maps either sorry. Try google.

Not all GPS units are intended for outdoors/hunting/fishing use. There are quite a few that are currently on the market that are intended only for road navigation, like the TomTom. Hopefully you researched GPS's before you bought, although if it isn't suitable for outdoors use you should be able to return it. I don't know of any "free" source of maps, but you can't just load any map into a GPS, each manufacturer seems to use their own proprietary file format. That being said, there is at least one product on the market that can be used across a small selection of manufacturer's GPS's, check for starters, I think that the name of the cross-platform software is Fugawi. Other than that just try googling for map sources for GPS's.

I bought a Magellan 500le. The box it came in states that it is suitable for marine, hiking, geo-caching, hunting/fishing and driving. When driving however, one needs to pull over or allow a passenger to navigate as the screen is small and would be unsafe to operate while driving. I have googled a few sites and found a few free ones but am reluctant to download for fear of viruses. I was hoping a fellow outdoors person may have been through this already and be able to point me to a SAFE place to download. The pay sites I have visited are asking from 20 to 50 dollars for maps.....OUCH....Sooooooo if any of you can help I would appreciate it. Thanks Shane

Try this :

I wont be held accountable for bad software or anything else. If you know how to DL torrents then try some of these. If not , get learnin'.

Magellan software is better protected ( bad for u ) than Garmin and its worse meaning not as in depth or visually appealing. IMO, bring the Magellan back and pay the extra $$ to get a Garmin. They are easier to crack and more way software options.

Stuff for Garmin :

not sure if this is what you are looking for but take a look at this thread. Ed
