It looks like a regular crab you would catch and keep on the coast but it seems to be an over grown with sea plants and barnacles regular dungenous crab
exkamiflyfisher

hmm that's a wierd lookin crustacean. my try contacting the DFO? perhaps an invasive species they would want to know about...
fishermanfrank

it looks like a BOX crab but not 100% sure

did you eat it????
Sergio

I didn't. Just sent photos to DFO. Waiting for the reply.
shizzyisback

trippy lookin lil guy almost a morphed rock crab..any word..?
Gecko

It's a Puget Sound King Crab. You don't want to be caught with that in you cooking pot. Nice find for Bowen area. I have dove that area for years and never seen one there.

looks like you might be right. Ed

Wow, haven't been on this site in forever (it got really bad and nasty a while ago- hopefully it's cleaned up a bit).

Looking at the photo, I would have to say that it is a Puget Sound King Crab. We have some of them at the Vancouver Aquarium where I teach Intertidal Marine Biology to highschool and elementary school kids.

The only thing that I find different about it is that it appears to have some softer texture to it, similar to a Sharpnose or Heart Crab (though those crabs are considerably smaller by a long shot).

Interesing find though. Post the answer when you hear back from the DFO.

The only thing that is making me question if it is a Puget Sound King is the colouration. Thought I'm sure it varies greatly depending on location and habitat, the PSKC's we have at the Vancouver Aquarium are a rich deep purple countershaded with bright oranges and creams.

It's a PKC. I have been diving for 20 years and I have seen a few. I also spent some time volunteering with DFO and the Vancouver Aquarium so I don't think it is an new crab for this area based on my exp. From what I can see in the pictures it has a stong develpoment of seaweed on it. This can be caused by spending more time in the shallows when searching for food. The seaweed will give the shell a strong red pigment. This is an OLD post!but at least there is no..........being said. ha-ha.Welsome back louis.

That is the strangest crab i have ever seen thanks for the pic!

I'm just wandering where it says that the crab was kept and not released??? Maybe you can point it out, treble?
