Was out this morning powerbaiting Sasamat. Caught nothing but funny thing was we had at least 5 powerbaits fly off our hooks as we casted. You could see them floating by the bridge area. As soon as we packed up and turned our backs...SPLASH!!! Splash!!! Splash!!!
3 powerbaits gone!!!! Went back to take a closer look...the fish was gone.
What a teaser!!!

ya that stuff happens i went to sasamat for a bit, my friend was using powerbait, he reeled in, a fish got on, but it got away! at last second before we left . lol u can try buntzen i saw ppl catch some trout there

Interesting thing about Sasamat - many people say that fish tend to stay in the upper layer of water all the time, while others (including myself) had good action fishing very deep.
With powerbait you should allow long leaders to present your bait on top of the weeds that grow on the bottom.

Alex, I was powerbaiting down to about 15 - 20 feet depth off the bridge. No action. Then I decreased depth by 1 foot until I was hanging the bait about 2 feet from the surface. No action. There were a few other guys there too...no action as well. I guess I wasn't deep enough but I've seen people get their fish dangling 3 to 5 feet deep.
That fish was jumping about 3 feet away from both swimming docks. What a smart fish.

How did you manage to present powerbait 2' from the surface?
Since this is a floating bait, it will keep floating to the surface and your leader will tangle with the main line. That will for sure scare the fish away.
I've seen one angler had a great success on Sasamat casting a tiny action tail and retrieving it veeeeery slowly. He was not casting far (tiny lead, 2 feet fine leader and a standard hook with this action tail).
Tight lines and sharp hooks!

I had a small splitshot near the end of the hook to get it to dangle 2 ft. Probably spooked all fish when it saw the float at that distance.
A long time ago, a friend of mine was having success in salt catching all sort of things using what was shown in your post above. It be fun to try that at Sasamat.

Hi Alex,
Regarding the action tail...do I need to put a swivel to the hook or tie the line directly to the hook? I'm using 6 lb Maxima Ultragreen. Do I still need to use a leader?

I went few times to Sasamat in the morning and I catch nothing not even a bite . Maybe later in the afternoon will work better any tips on the best time to fish ..

sasamat is a very unpredictable lake....i've fished there many times.....you would see fish jumping near the bridge yet you can only hook them near bottom.....pink powerbait with sparlke was my favourite...never had success with worms but never tried a wormy tail like alex showed.
