I fished Mike Lake last weekend.
It looked very promissing with fish jumping everwhere as if tons of fish in there. About a dozen of floaters were there. However, every one was having a hard time to get fish hooked. I used chironomids on both floating and sinking line. Tried leeches, wooly bugger, doc spratly, damsel nymph, etc, etc.
Only one fish and few bites in 4 hours efforts while fish kept jumping all aound. Hell of a frustrating day!!

Can someone share your experience on this lake and advise what the best way to fish there is ?
Why it seems so difficult to get fish hooked there ?
I think chironomids should be the best bet at this time of the year.

Best way to fish Mike lake in my experience is not to fish it at all !!!! Never had any luck there, ever But....... Have heard of people catching fish there just not me.

Mike Lake taught me all about fly fishing a decade ago. The wiggling lillypads at the west end in the decending light. The long cast. The heart stomping hit on a dry fly. The loons that cruise with you for a while. The beaver that whacks it's tail right behind you from the false edge there letting you know who's boss. The heron. Or the fry jumping at the image of the airplanes above. And sometimes i caught a big. I'm not going to post my pics of the bounty. I have quite a few. Sometimes far and few between. Not like the doc workers. But oh so much better.

Oh man, kk... I gave up on the lake myself eventually. Couln't catch anything later but still i had a few good years! That impossiblly long cast on the lillypads is still my best memory yet. Well, ok i've had a few since. But that was by far the clincher.

cought fish the 2 x i went there
10-14'' but most to the 10'' side using a green wooly bugger on fast retreives

but i would choose somewhere other than that mudpit

foley lake or lindemen are my favs

Foley - Chipmunk area - i will try that one then. I just remembered something encouraging about Mike lake though. Last month i asked the park guy at Golden Ears about Mike lake and how the fishing and access was. He said it was just stocked. And i think he said they were doing some work on the access and the doc.

ya they just stocked but plenty of small fish and does get a little borring pulling in minnows --- but for a local a local lake and just to get away i geuss its alright

if you go to foley fish bank from island to falls is best with green wooley bugger.

even if you shore fish you can do alright.

at least the fish are keepers
