Author Topic: Should I have taken him?

Hooks has been a good resource for years but I finally signed up. Never really looked at the Forum. I'm enjoying the dialog.

So let me make an offering...

A picture of my Wolf lake rainbow. Normally I'm more than happy to release 19 out of 20 caught but my friends were out dirtbiking and I didn't have a camera (and everyone has tall fish stories).

After a half hour of constant hits I caught it with a damselish fly nymph on my 4W St Croix with an old(!) 3 lb tippet (I sucked a live nymph out of him that looked pretty close). The same fly was hot at Weaver a month earlier when nothing else worked.

I almost had a heart attack. I was not expecting it at all. It's a different experience but fits right in with the many evening dry fly beside the lilly pads and other experiences.

God I love flyfishing. Scunked or not.

People - should I have released him? In retrospect I think the Raven (god?) that came by a few hours earlier that October day OK'ed the take.

If you caught lots & kept & ate 1, I'd say no problem.

I dont see any issue with taking a fish at all. as long as you intend to eat it...

Hell man, thats a nice fish. Keep him and eat him I say.

Four of us went back for a few days (after boxing day).

Normally we take turns trying to best each other with a salmon dinner. Since none of us fish salmon this made it all the better. Tasty - it went over very well.

My thought was that the rainbow was so dominant in such a tiny lake that it might be time to make room for the others.

I had about 20+ minutes to think about it as he dragged me all over the lake and through the weeds. He might have been to stressed to survive the ordeal.

But then he's probably THE gene pool.

btw, driving by I've never seen anybody fishing this lake over the last 20 years. It was sunny so I inflated my (stripped down) boat, threw it in the water and had constant hits for half an hour. I finally managed to drop the ores in time to hook him.

Anyone interested in a picture of the fly?

Since when are terestrial damsel flies red?
I just remembered them checking me out at Wolf lake.

BTW Thanks for the replies guys.

Here's another bizzar one. I caught a dragonfly on a dry fly at Mike lake years ago. Freaked me out on the backswing. Huge commotion whizzing past my head.

Bats are way smarter. They follow the line right to the fly and stop dead to check it out.

I cast way better when I can't see.

cheers!

dustyir. I talked to an old timer well camped at Grace a few years back and he was tell'n stories of 3-4 pounders coming out of Grace and Wolf "back in the day" guess you must have time traveled! The biggest I ever caught out of either was MAX 3/4 pound and I do mean MAX! Nice fish, nice pic and tales. PS. if I had to guess I'd guess you also enjoy another one of BC's favourite pass times! Cheers.
