Author Topic: Salmon, when are they not safe to eat?

Me and my dad went fishing yesterday(the 30th) on the Vedder, and landed a spring and two chums. The spring was half darkish, but still green with dots around the top, just a bit dark near the bottom. The chum were getting dark, and one had a worm on the outside. All three had a little bit of tail rot starting. We released all three, not sure if they were edible or not.

When are the fish not safe to eat, and why? What should be considered when you've landed a fish? Are there any parts that you cut away and don't eat, like the meat by the fins? Are Chums even worth keeping?

I have found that the springs can be smoked and turn out ok.Gently but firmly press your finger against their sides near the back, firm flesh is good soft is not. Chums are toxic tigers & I would have to be starving badly before I would take the chance of eating one. Made that mistake once & paid dearly for it. Enjoy their fight, watch out fot their teeth & let 'em go.

Toxic Tiger?!. thats a good one. was fishing the stave a couple weeks ago and nailed a male chum right in the chops. was bringing him in to release when a snagger down river saw me and proudly told me " thats one nice coho ". I now affectionately call all chum " european coho ".

If I told you that I became a human straw, would you get my meaning?
