Author Topic: Is this a Rainbow Trout?

Hey everybody. Im very familiar with rainbows, as I fish for them on the regular. I Caught this little guy out of Lake Kalamalka in Vernon. Its extremely translucent fins make me question its species. Is this a kokanee? or half Kokanee possibly? Or just a really cool lookin rainbow? thanks for your time.
ThisGuy

Oh my. The picture quality is really poor. lol. It doesnt do justice for how crystal clear the fins really were.

Hard to tell for sure in pic but I'd say a kelted rainbow. Fins will get eroded and translucent/opaque during spawning. Looks thin to me as well so I'd say it's a mending kelt.

I just looked up "mending Kelt" in google images. Similar pictures came up. What does mending kelt mean?

A "mending kelt" is a fish that has spawned, and is recovering. Common for rainbows, not possible for kokanee.

That is soooo cool. Thanks for the info. Really helpful. Cheers man.
