Has anyone been out since the snowfall? is the ice still safe?
cagey

check jg's post on ice augers. he said there was 4 inches the other day . Too thin for this chicken !
gearbox

lol. I thought your username was going to tell us how your day went.
sharphooks moderator

My thoughts exactly, Gearbox. I was ready for a good story about survival. Please, everyone be carefull. Cagey might be a chicken but he's lived long by being that way !
jg

More people out fishing today. I even saw couple groups way out in the middle of the lake, also couple other groups making a fire on ice.
mzmann

Good seeing you out again J, looking like we will be hitting it again wed morning.
fell in

Thanks guys i will be heading out later this week
cagey

Hey mzmann. jg and I are trying Phillips tomorrow but let us know when you go again. My buddy did well Monday. He assures me I will be safe!
Maybe meet you there one morning !
mzmann

Sounds good and will do, let me know how you guys do at phillips. They mucky or "gardom" tasting out of there?
mzmann

The 2 of us managed our limit at Monte today in about 6hrs with 5 each and a bunch more small guys released.
fell in

Brought home 3 today, released 2 smaller ones. Action was good early but died after 9:30.
jg

Great seeing you too Mike and thank you for the fireball shots and other I caught 4 small guys after you guys and all other guys left. By the way, are you planning on fishing Monte again some time soon? I did not get to see the monsters today cagey kept telling about.
jg

Thank you very much again for showing me the lakes today cagey. Even though I did not get to see any monsters today, I have very much enjoyed the stories you told me. Actually, I am thinking of fishing Monte on friday morning. Let me know if you can join me. I can fish from 7 to 12 and will bring some maggots
mzmann

We didn't get there until about 830 and there was a bit of a lull in bites from about noon to 1 then a few more just before we left around 215.....and no problems jg.....will see about heading out again Friday morning as well...will be there around 830 if so.
jg

Hope to see you there, I and maybe cagey will b at the same spot.
mzmann

So far looks like we should be there.....will be heading out after dropping the kids at the bus.
jg

Awesome, cagey and I will see u there tomorrow.
mzmann

Great day out again with close to 30 caught between the 4 of us (2 kept limit and 2 kept 4). Approx 6hrs of fishing for most of us.
cagey

tell the truth mzmznn !!! Three guys caught the fish. one just lost fish and broke his line ! had a great time with good company anyway!! I learned something. Never use foot warmers. My foot has a terrible burn on it so I did not go today. I doubt I will make it on Monday JG but will try.
mzmann

LOL, well I was trying to be nice cagey, haha. Sucks about the foot warmers though!....can't believe it burnt you, I use em for hands once in awhile as I have great boots that my feet never get cold in and have never even come close to the warmers getting hot enough to warrant leaving a burn!...I would almost email the company about that! Definite good time with great company though. We may still head out monday again as well and drag the kidlets along as it looks that they have Monday off but will have to play that by ear for now. Tight lines and take care of that foot.
cagey

could not believe it either. My boots are good but my toes get cold, old age I guess !
My fot felt awful hot as I walked out but then seemed ok. While driving home I realized something was wrong. It is a big burn with a huge blister. I was going to contact the company as the warmer obviously did not work correctly as my other foot was fine.
Thanks for trying to cover up my inability to catch a fish ! I almost lost my fish to one of my dogs. He stole my bag from the back of my truck and scattered them all over the place. not a tooth mark on them (the pups life was spared lol ). I guess he likes his kokanee cooked.
Maybe see you Monday for a while but not sure.
jg

Oh my. I cant believe ur foot got burned by foot warmer. I hope it is not too serious. About the almost lost kok, it must have been Bollo that went through the fishy bag. Good thing ur cat didnt find the bag. I hope to see u out there on Monday but please dont push it if you are going to concentrate more on your hurting foot than fishing. Also, check ur line and knots. You dont want to lose another big one again
mzmann

Nice little fat brookies there!....look like darke fish maybe?....tried to drive up and check out Becker but didn't make it very far without a sled or chains at very least lol.
cagey

nice brookies dump.
I managed to hobble out this am and actually caught 3 koks although one was set free unharmed. there were not very many fish showing their faces today as there were Friday. JG had one fish when I left . Noone else seemed to be having much luck .
Will likely try again mid-week
mzmann

enough said dumptruck, lol.....at least confirm this much for me.....is it off the connector? lol......and good job at getting a few today cagey, heard from jg that it was fairly slow out there today as well......friend and I will probably try again tomorrow its looking.
jg

It looks like red lake near kamloops has been stocked with about 35000 brookies for last few years and is a famous ice fishing destination, even from the lower mainland. I think it might hold some fatties like the dump's. Should we pay the lake a visit this winter?
cagey

sounds possible JG. Maybe discuss that later in the week at Monte??
mzmann

Lol we hit Red a couple weeks ago and was fairly slow....I'm guessing a connector lake maybe up by chicken ranch but nice fish either way......limited today at Monte again and even managed a decent bow as well....pic was before our last one..
jg

Hey cagey. Come out tomorrow. I was gonna go to monte on thursday, but found out it is new moon tomorrow. Hopely i get some help from no moon, I sure need it.
jg

Congrats!! for catching the limit+ every outing. Your kids must have loved the nice weather and the plenty of fishes. I painted some of my jig hooks with a nail polish because the one I had was wearing off. Poor skilled fisherman blaming gear here. I hope new moon and new hook give me more bites tomorrow.
cagey

can't JG. Got to work!!
mzmann

No kids just Troy and I as kids went to grandma's for the day. Been doing good all outings but today we really had to work for them and working the 6ft-20ft column pretty hard. Good luck out there tomorrow!
jg

Thank you.
About the brookies, If red is no good, lakes near the connector looks promising. I can stop by on the way to vedder in about a month. I want to feel some fat brookies like dump's
mzmann

Well not saying Red is no good at all as I do know there is some piggy brookies and bows in there, it just wasn't fishing great the day we decided to check it out is all, lol. Give me a shout when you decide to hit the vedder and may hit it as well if im not to busy then.
cagey

JG, you might be able to count me in on the Vedder too!
My buddy fishes Red Lk, a fair bit. He always does real well when it first ices over but it slows down as the winter progresses, like most ice fishing lakes. He was there 2 weeks ago and had to work for his limit. In November he got his limit in no time. I would be fair game to go for a ride up there some time but we should put it on our list for next winter as soon as it ices over.
Not sure if I can go to Monte tomorrow, at least not much before noon.
jg

hi cagey.
fishing was quite slow today. only pulled 2 really small ones that were released. did not see many pulled out neither around me.
anyways, highlight of the day was when the guy beside me asked me for time. i checked my smart phone to see what time it was, then put it back inside the pocket of my jacket and forgot to close the zipper and kept fishing, and when i was packing up for the day, i leaned over to grab the flasher and hook that were laying near the hole, my phone slipped out of the pocket and fell in straight to the hole. a man i met today is going to bring a powerful magnet tomorrow for me to try retreiving the phone from the lake bottom. i doubt the phone will work even if i find it, but it is worth a try.
so i will be at the lake (opposite side of the spot where we were and about 200m to the south) tomorrow again fishing for koks and my phone.
also i was planning to hit the vedder sometime early in march. i usually leave late at night, arrive at the vedder for the first light, fish for a day, go into van to hang out with buddies and spend the next day in the city, fish the next morning and come home. maybe we can meet up at the river or come up with some other plan. come out tomorrow if you can, so we can discuss and stuff.
just so you know, i won't be able to fish until february.
jg

for sure mzmann.
i will let u know when i know what date i will be heading to chiliwack.
cagey

"fell in" must have been thinking of your phone!
We might make it later in the morning as I have some calls to make .
The Vedder sounds good. I usually drive down for first light then motel it for the night and fish the next day, Would be nice to have someone to fish with......my buddy Mr Grey1 might be able to join us. The more the merrier !
hope to catch you tomorrow before you retire until February!
jg

i will be at the lake around 7 30, but if you cannot find me, you can find me at the parking lot around 11 at the same parking lot because i am meeting the man who is bringing me the magnet there.
gearbox

how deep of water was it where your phone went in? if it's not a sony it's going to be garbage now, I would think. and even if it were still ok by some miracle, a powerful magnet would probably wreck it. I would just forget about it.
cagey

you are probably right gearbox but you take all the fun out of catching a phone in 100 feet of water!!! Anyone ever done that before?
Sorry, JG , but we couldn't make it again today. hopefully tomorrow??
gearbox

you are right, cage. it would be kind of cool to be able to retrieve it. it would be downright flukey really. does it even have enough metal to stick to a magnet? and it is probably in weeds too, maybe glass up, under a tree, who knows. is it an iphone? if it is, it's in a better place now.
jg

Gearbox. It is Samsung android. This morning, I took other fishermen's advice just like yours and did not bother try finding the phone and focused on fishing instead. Thank you very much for your input.

For Monte fishermen, it was another slow day, pulled one average size and one smaller keeper. The guys who have been limiting out every outing only caught couple or non today.
cagey

I think I will go elsewhere tomorrow!
Too bad you didn't catch your phone. It would be quite the story. The odds were definitely against it, as Gearbox said. Drop me an email JG if you find some spare time, JG.
gearbox

I think only the Samsung alpha has a metal body. I'm not sure if it's really metal enough to stick to a magnet though. I just put some strong magnets to my old blackberry and absolutely nothing. I'm sure not about to put a magnet anywhere near my M8 though. Wait until summer and take a dive, mark the spot now with a gps. But you'll still have new weed growth and stuff to deal with. I bumped a brand new rod and reel overboard a couple summers ago. I bought a mega magnet with the same intentions, but quickly abandoned the idea. The odds are so minimal that it's not even worth the time. plus, I'd rather be actually fishing if I'm on the water.
gearbox

now that I am looking at my phone, I remember that even the alpha had a grippy back like all the other samsungs. my phone is metal, but it feels more aluminum. I'm not sure how well it would stick to a magnet.
mzmann

no expert here by any means but I would say with 12-14" a week ago you would be good to go with no worries as next to spring thaw I just cant see 8-12" melting in a week and I trust ice to walk/fish on with 4"....i've never had an issue/scare or any problems...(knock on wood, lol) Also, of course higher elevation lakes have even less worry. We have tons of people fishing the local urbanized lakes Swan/Shannon that are right in the valley and in town here (vernon/kelowna) 4"- 8" with no problems so cant see you having a worry.......also, never hurts to have ice piks strung through your coat if ever worried at all or just feel better off safe than sorry.
gearbox

I don't know where you're fishing dump, but I always look at the webcams. the Elkhart cam on the connector has been above zero most the week. and rain is forecast tomorrow I think, with possible temps on sunday/Monday hitting double digits, rumour was as high as +16 for Kamloops.
cagey

Find a 300 pound friend and let him walk out first!!
This warm weather won't have any effect on a lake that had that much ice. It actually has barely got above zero here until today.
Most of the best fishing for trout is close to shore (not like koks) but if the shoreline is marshy watch out as it does not always freeze. I doubt that would be the case at your secret lake though, not with a foot of ice. it should be absolutely fine until the end of March.
I am not an expert having had wet feet a couple of times (those marshy shorelines are tricky !). Good luck and be carefull!
sharphooks moderator

As you all can see I have "altered" a couple of posts and deleted others. Behave yourselves gentlemen!
mzmann

Be careful on the ice out there boys...rumor has it someone went through at Monte this morning....anyone with further details?
cagey

afurther regards to someone going for a polar bear swim?
I find it hard to believe as the ice was a solid 5 to 6 inches, not layered or anything. The rain is just freezing on the frozen ground let alone the ice. Also the high temps haven't hit here yet . It got up to 4 degrees here (about the same altitude I would think as Monte Lk,) but it froze overnight. I suspect if someone fell in they fell through an unmarked hole. I saw one last time I was there that was big enough to fall through. Someone used an axe to make this huge hole and left it unmarked in any way. walking out in the dark you would not see it. I might be joining a buddy tommorrow and will let you know. Before the ice rots there is usually water around the shore first from my experience, then it goes quickly.
mzmann

yeah no idea to the validity of the "report" as it was info heard from the guys as surplus herbies.....I hear ya on the good 6" being there but if you venture around the lake a bit you will find places that dont look to be anymore than 3 or 4 tops, maybe less so I am sure there is some sketchy spots still. Heard of guys still out at the normal spots with no worries though so more of a use at your own discretion sort of thing I guess, lol.

Anyone been catching lately?
