Author Topic: Salmon Fishing Noob

Okay, new to the game and want a little advice, if I can. Fished trout as a kid for years in Okanagan and have been out of it for a LONG time. Living down in Lower Mainland for last 15yrs, want to get into Salmon. Looking at gear and have to admit, overwhelmed!!
Been looking at buying a Shimano Technium 10'6 rod and Penn 4000 reel on advice from a buddy.
Question it a good choice?

Sorry I should have mentioned it's a Penn Fierce 4000

The rod is good but most people use a levelwind reel especialy the abu garcia ambassadeur 6500 c3 for about 100$Its a good reel for the money.

Awesome, Thanks for the tips folks!! Will look into that Ambassador

Just haven't been a huge fan of the Baitcaster reels as I have snagged those bastards more than I can count. Grew up on Spinners and are comfortable with them

goin fishin you mind tellin me what centerpin u are talking about?

yeah , going fishing is right if u want to switch to cp or bc u need practice ... better if someone explain and show to u how it is working , and u should do couple trips to the river or lake in spots where is no one is around and just practice casting , don't even bother with hook weight + float and bang bang

Thanks Alex. Was doing a little more research and chatting with a few more buddies who have fished for years and another suggestion was the Technium 11' casting rod with a Daiwa TD Luna 300. I might lean towards that as I trust their opinion. Still not sure about the casting reel, but they said they would teach me. So hope to hell I don't birds nest it LOL

there's such good prices out there nowadays. I just bought an okuma convector cv 20 dlx with line counter for trolling rainbows. reel was barely over $100, and it works beautifully.
