anybody know if sockeye are open,, sorry but ive been on vacation for few weeks and have no clue what is happening.. and any info on how good the fishing is on the fraser would be nice too. thx

yeah they have been open for a couple of weeks. the fraser is open 2 per day limit.

The Socs are closed on thursday.

august 19 therye shutting the river down for soks. also dfo is plannong on making the sockeye a sport fishery...when i don't know. maybe someone else has more info?

this sounds kind of stupid but i think they should close down sockeye for 2 year or even a year just to rebuild the stocks. that includes native nets and commercial. it sounds stupid but thats my opinion

Poor water conditions (warm water in the fraser) and spawning habitat degridation are the 2 largest factors endangering the sockeye. Sockeye run in 4 cycles, 2 low years and 2 peak years...next year is a peak year and shutting down any fisheries then would be pointless unless environmental conditions indicate otherwise.
In 4 years time when this years offspring return (and this year was the low of lows) then it may make sense to shut down all fisheries if indeed we see poor spawning bed returns this year or if environmental factors are poor.
