Hello all,

I need help setting up gear for bass fishing. I just moved to a place on a lake in Northern California. We have a dock on the water and the fishing off it is pretty good. I have hooked a few bass, but never actually landed one. I am used to ultra-lite stream fishing, so my gear is probably a little too light. I am fortunate enough to be able to buy new gear, so help me out! What kind of pole should I get and should I go with a spinning reel or bait caster? (brand?). How heavy a line should I run? Do I need a super duty leader? How should I rig it up? I have been using a green rubber power grub and this seems to work pretty good. I have tried a couple old spinners, but no bite with them. I need as much info. as possible. Tips and tricks as well as tackle recommendations would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi, Jeff!

Most fishermen prefer plastic worms / curling tails / bait fish / small frogs to hard lures when fishing for bass. The key to success with bass fishing is to give some action to your lure. Don't just steadily retrieve it.

Topwater lures like buzz baits (see the picture) work well. You retrieve them on the surface really fast. It may seem like bass will have a hard time chasing them - don't worry, they really like fast retrieve for topwater toys.

And one more comment - you should target shallows with lot's of lilly pads and other types of grass. Bass loves warm water and cover.

try jitterbugs and buzzbombs and torpedos on calm water and run a dark colored tube jig and you will be gairented to catch them if there there no matter what size they are
